Senate Ready To Apologize For Not Enacting Anti-Lynching Law

Author: AP Source: USA Today

Title: SENATE READY TO APOLOGIZE FOR NOT ENACTING ANTI-LYNCHING LAW
The Senate seldom says it's sorry, although it is now ready to officially express its remorse over the failure to outlaw lynching in the United States.
A resolution that the chamber was likely to take up Monday voices regret for the Senate's unwillingness for years to pass a law stopping a crime that cost the lives of over 4,700 people, mostly blacks, between 1882 and 1968.
Doria Dee Johnson, the great-great granddaughter of a black South Carolina farmer who was killed by a white mob nearly a century ago, was to be on hand for the floor vote.

| Apologies Should Be Given When They Are Really Due | Jun 13th. at 4:35:00 pm EDT

Look on the bright side. The Senate moved a little faster than the Vatican, at least, when it apologized, look how long it took the Catholic Church to apologize for its treatment of Galileo! I wonder if he's still under house arrest? Apologies after the fact are all too easy, but it does imply that the history -- and what it means is not lost on us. However, it would be much better, if just once-- such apologies could be given while those receiving them could be around to appreciate it. Now if they pass such a law now, might save some in the future.

of the ancient people of Israel, I would like to apologize for the massacre of the cananites and other tribes in these parts.
And (taking the judeo-christian lore to extreme) as a decendant of Eve I would like to apologize to the decendants of Adam for that whole apple incident.
saying sorry for past sins is a bit ridiculous in my view, it is the cowards way out. I can just see some Republican president around 2050 apologizing to the american people for that Bush has done...

Q: What is the only commodity cheaper than a politician's promise during an election campaign?
A: A politician's apology.
How many people were killed? And they refused to act then, when taking action might have at least seemed to accomplish something?

that the U.S. Senate finally has the moxy to issue a formal apology for such a thing. Unfortunately, without simultaneously enacting a lynching law, the apology is an empty gesture. That is shameful.

I think this anti-lynching law is in direct conflict with the new Bush policy as reported by the Onion.....
