Pagans Honor A Crone

Author: Marketta Gregory Source: Rochester Democrat and Chronicle (NY)

Title: PAGANS HONOR A CRONE
About the time the sun slipped from the sky, the Pagan Church of the Sacred Pentacle drew its circle.
"I draw thee ... be thee a holy place of worship," Heidi Gleber said as she walked three times around the edge of the white circle on the ground. As she spoke, she pointed a wand outward toward the edges of her one-acre lawn, essentially drawing the circle large enough that the Pagan children playing nearby could come and go while their parents did spiritual work and honored a member entering her later years.
The ceremony for Shanna Schoenfeldt marked what the Pagans call the crone stage of life. It was a celebration of the wisdom that comes from living.
Wren Chirps In: And so, in the future, may we assume that the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle will be contacting the Pagan Church of the Sacred Pentacle to comment on the legitimacy of the baptisms or confirmations officiated by the Christ Community Church as well? Just askin'...

Lora (Leominster, Massachusetts) - Email Me

I grew up back in the Good Old Days when everyone carried a knife! When I was a kid, it was normal for 10-year-old kids (okay, mostly boys, but generally speaking) to be given Swiss Army knives for their birthdays. Everyone did have at least a pocketknife in the car or somewhere, just because you never know when you might need to, umm, skin a deer, or, uh, a bottle of 1998 Pinot Noir might fall off a truck and you would have to drink it in the untamed wilderness of Route 30.
Okay, the reasons were stupid, but everyone did have a pocketknife. I still do--along with duct tape, they're handy for impromptu car repairs, cutting kindling for campfires, getting a grip on things that normally require fingernails, and cutting up fruit stolen from a nearby orchard for lunch. They're at least as useful as cell phones.

they were portrayed in a positive light. And I like the idea of a croning, especially since I'll be one in the not so distant future.
And, I agree, our male elders should be honored also.

"I draw thee ... be thee a holy place of worship, " Heidi Gleber said as she walked three times around the edge of the white circle on the ground.
If I were refering to something in the second person, I'd address it more personally. Was Heidi speaking to the circle or to the audience. This sort of thing can really confuse us familiars.
"And we don't do any sacrifices, " Gleber said. "The only thing we offer to the gods is food and drink."
I want Sacrifices of Grain and of Kine. Further, I'll want a Coke (r) to go with my Hamburger.
"After a little more spiritual business, the meeting came to an end and the spirits that the Pagans said had been guarding against negativity were released."
So, how'd a reporter get in?

Rev. Heidi Andrews (Salisbury, Maryland) - Email Me - Web

I found just a few things in this article I don't agree with. The statement that Pagans believe "in many" gods kinda sorta make it seem like ALL Pagans do, when some, like myself, are montheists. Also the statement that the athame tradition came from a time when (paraphrasing here) "everyone carried a knife" just kind of seemed like it wrote off the tradition as "just because."
I mean, maybe the author didn't do a whole lot of research, or maybe she did just enough to try to explain little bits and pieces, but I feel that if you don't truly understand something, maybe you shouldn't include them in your writing.
Maybe I'm just in a nit-picking mood this morning, lol.
