Government Moves To Curb Use Of Chemical In Teflon

Author: Brian Ross Source: ABC News (US)

Title: GOVERNMENT MOVES TO CURB USE OF CHEMICAL IN TEFLON
The federal government said today the science is still coming in, but that there are enough health concerns already to virtually eliminate continued exposure to the key chemical used to make Teflon.
Teflon is a $2 billion a year business and one of the country's best known products. DuPont once called it the housewife's best friend.
Today, the federal government said DuPont and had voluntarily agreed to virtually eliminate by the year 2010 any new emissions of the key Teflon chemical from its factories.
Scientific studies have found that Teflon's key chemical, linked to cancer and organ damage in laboratory animals, is in the blood of almost all Americans.

NEVER use Teflon or aluminum cooking products. Get rid of them immediately! For health and safety utilise only glass, cast iron or stainless steel pots and pans.

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is the key processing ingredient they are talking about. Found another article that explains a little bit more about it. It does make one kind of shudder. I'm glad I 'stick' to cast iron cooking (bad pun, I know... just couldn't stop myself)

PTFE (Teflon) is made by free-radical vinyl polymerization. In other words, it uses all the same chemical reactions as various other household chemicals, polymers and biochemical processes. Gotta be the TFE monomer, which is a gas.
I can see why it would be pretty toxic. Yuck.
I wonder, if they have to stop making it, will they finally let the rest of us know how they get the Teflon to stick to the pan? That's been a trade secret for a long time, no one's been able to figure it out. Some sort of adhesive, as it outgasses at high temperature, but it doesn't outgas TFE. Something else.

My guess would be the Teflon Monomer. Monomers are little chemicals that link togeather to form arbitrarily large chemicals called Polymers. They could be talking about a solvent or catalyst, but the Monomer is what would be crucial.
It's possible that the patent for Teflon is running out, and DuPont simply wants everybody to use something newly patented, like they did with CFCs.
1,1-2,2 TFE should be pretty toxic, but leakage should already be an environmental offense, worse than the Iso-Cyanates of Bhopal.
