But Did They Also Influence Christianity?

Author: Sarah Blaskovich   Source: Columbia Missourian (MO)

Title: BUT DID THEY ALSO INFLUENCE CHRISTIANITY?

We know they invented...

the concept of modern time
grooming instruments and hand tools
board games
advanced mathematics

But did they also influence Christianity?

A long time ago, a man was born of a virgin in the likeness of God. After spreading messages of love and peace in his early life, he was betrayed by his friends and slain on a slab of wood. He was then resurrected on Earth before returning to heaven.

The man’s name isn’t Jesus. It’s Osiris, the god-man of ancient Egypt.

Differences In Egyptian Belief Apr 26th. at 10:59:20 am EDT

Lady-hearted Mojo (Irving, Texas) - Email Me

The concepts of what happens to the soul after death varied during Egypt's history. Earlier belief had the deceased traveling nightly with Ra on the Boat of a Million Years as He traveled through the Duat, and visiting the living during the day.
It was the Great Ennead at Heliopolis that came up with the idea of the Hall of Judgement in which the deceased was judged by the 42 Assessors and Osirus. If the decease's heart weight less than Ma'at's Feather s/he would live for eternity in the Field of Reeds (the Egyptians did not believe in reincarnation) . This after-life was very similar to their mortal life minus the hardships. If the decease's heart weighed more than Ma'at's Feather the soul was tossed to Ammut, who devoured it. This meant the complete anniliation of the soul. Your ride was over.

Probably the most obvious parallels between Egyptian religion and Xian is the emphasis on burial instead of cremation. The belief in a paradise and a nasty underworld after a judgement of your behavior. An underworld of fire and boiling water, although that probably varies from group to group. This was probably until you die a second time, not for eternity. Nightly, Ra would sail in his solar barque and pull some out of the fire, like Jesus's three day stay in Hell. One could go and on.

Good To See Articles Like This! Apr 25th. at 9:35:24 am EDT

There is a mountain of evidence presented by many different scholars that yes, indeed, Christianity was not merely "influenced" by much older religions but is a complete rip-off of those older beliefs.
Many scholarly works have been written on the subject and in actuality, Christianity is derived from *Pagan* sun-god worship, astrotheology and the precession of the equinoxes. (I included a few good sites for reference in a recent LJ post on this very subject.)
It is unfortunate that the masses are unaware of these facts and still believe the same dogma that all that is not Christian is evil and that Pagans are going to hell in a handbasket.
The only antidote for such narrow-mindedness is *knowledge*, that is, if people can open their minds enough to listen to the *real* truth first!
It is good to see articles like this making the news. Perhaps it will enlighten a few minds...

Of Course Religions Borrow From Each Other Apr 23rd. at 11:50:32 pm EDT

Searcher (Milan, Indiana) - Email Me

We all breath the same air, drink the same water, and share a unique need for fellowship with those who beleave the same, or close to it, as we do. But no religion or faith has the right to condem others or state that it is the only true religion. When I hear those words I become very afraid because I beleave that one of our greatest freedoms is the freedom to chose our own path.

Also consider this, in some way shape or form don't we all creait our god or gods in our own image?

If, as supposed, the Hebrews were slaves to the Egyptians for ,what, 500 years or so it would stand to reason that quite a bit of the slave owners beliefs would be absorbed by those serving them and past on to thier offspring. So on & so forth. I guess I will never understand why people insist on making life difficult for everone. Peace, Dara

In other news: The sky is blue, the US dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, and I drink alcoholic beverages.

I've known this for quite a few years now. The Vatican kept stonewalling people who tried to shed light on the origins of Christian mythology for centuries.

Alot Influenced Christainity Apr 23rd. at 4:48:35 pm EDT

Shadow (Webb City, Missouri) - Email Me

The bible and every word in it is a man made object. The stores of the bible are stories from other much older religions, changed by men to inflence other men. It is certain christianity is nothing more than a false religion, spead across the world to afford its creators (men) wealth and power. Christianty was created from other religions, took many festivals, images, and traditions from other religions attempting to convert the people. When the christians attempt at converting people did not work, they then turned to violence and forec to convert people. There are just to many holes in the bible to actually believe any of it is true.

No. They Created Christianity. Apr 23rd. at 2:17:08 pm EDT

bigcat (peoria, Illinois) - Email Me

Of course they did. Long before Moses was put into the river to be found by the Egyptian Princess, Osiris was also hidden the same way, by Isis, who was trying to preserve his body from Set. And since the Osiris version predates Moses by some several hundred years, it sure wasn't Moses who was first. As for monotheism itself, Akenaton was definitely first with that concept too. That he failed wasn't his fault. It is even quite possible that the ten plagues of Egypt were not biblical in origin either, considering that many of those plagues have Set's name on them and that they were probably not as uncommon to Egypt as we were led to believe. Even as far back as Genesis, Lilith, one of my favorite creatures, figured prominently in Jewish Tradition, dating back from Sumerian legends. And there are many traditions which come from Assyria, Persia, Babylon etc. A nomadic people can't help incorporating tales they encounter in any of the lands they settle, altering them to fit their own style and traditions. Some have been there so long their origins may have been lost long ago. But even so, it still doesn't mean that those myths and legends belong to them anymore than passing through those lands would make them natives. Christianity itself is little more than a purloined collection of myths and legends of the Entire Middle East all rolled into a single entity and hawked as a "truth". Those beings and gods that didn't fit into the Christian mold later became convenient demons with slightly altered names in an equally mythical hierarchy.

I'm Sorry, But It's Poor Scholarship Apr 23rd. at 2:12:27 pm EDT

Greenman (Columbus, Indiana) - Email Me

Does she really think she is the first to read the Book of the Dead and find those similarities? I'm afraid she isn't, as Egyptologists have recognized these things for many years now.
The truth is, though, there are similarities in all religions at some point. Comparitive religion studies have demonstrated that this happens even when there is *no* direct historical connection or link. Commonalities do not demonstrate direct dependence of one religion upon another.
I have to agree with the African scholar in the article. The archeological evidence-- including altars, pottery and the Ebla tablets--demonstrates a direct historical link between Canaanite religion and Hebrew religion. There is even pottery that shows Yahweh has a Canaanite consort Asherah. We don't find Egyptian religious artifacts in the digs, therefore scholars agree that the Palestinian influence is historical and others are not.
Lisa Ann Bargeman's new book simply falls into the catagory of Robert Grave's _The White Goddess_. A fascinating read, interesting theories, but low on evidence and poor scholarship.
As a Pagan, I appreciate what Bargeman is trying to do. Demonstating similarities between religions can help the world see that we all aren't that different and that we can respect each other and work together. But saying "Your religion ripped off my religion" without evidence is not helpful, in my opinion.

blessed be and divine do,

Greenman

Consider These Points Apr 23rd. at 11:19:59 am EDT

stalkingwolf (Bullhead City, Arizona) - Email Me

1 there is a school of thought that believes Jesus and Mary M . were priest and Priestess of an Isinian/Osirian "church".

2 another ( and some of the first group) believe that what R. Jeshua actually taught was a return to an older type of Judiasm which believed in a God and Goddess.

3. Osiris was God of the Under world & JUDGE
of the dead. When you died you came before Osiris
who weighed your heart against the ostrich feather of
Ma'at . If your heart was lighter than the feather you
could pass to the next world. If it wasn't , it was thrown to anubis (sp?) and you were consigned to the underworld.

4 there are many more similarities between the Jesus story and Egyptian stories.

Why Not? Apr 23rd. at 9:33:27 am EDT

Storm Summerhaven (Lanark County, Ontario) - Email Me

Why WOULDN'T Christianity have Egyptian influences?

Christianity is, effectively, a Jewish sect. Jesus was a Jew. He never left his birth religion, and never advocated for that. He wanted REFORM in his own religion. Ergo, anyone who truly follows Jesus' teachings belongs to a reformed Jewish sect.

The Jews were displaced Babylonians. The ROOTS of their religious belief system were formed in THAT area.

After they migrated west, they spent GENERATIONS in Egypt. There were "Jewish" children born there whose daily god-diet, as it were, was the Egyptian pantheon.

They were probably more familiar with the Egyptian gods than with their own. And the stories all over the Middle East and northern Africa were very similar. It would be expected that they would become inextricably intertwined. [No wonder Moses had such a hard time breaking his people of their "bad habits"!]

Surely there can be no doubt that the Jewish religion, ergo the Christian one, was STRONGLY influenced by Egyptian culture/religious belief. [Though I imagine that Orthodox Jews would be just as loath to admit it as Fundie Christians must be.]

And very factual, but everyone knows that christianity is nothing but a ripoff of a bunch of other faiths that came before it!!!!
