Hollywood Puts Its Faith In Holy Films

Author: John Harlow Source: Times Online (UK)

Title: HOLLYWOOD PUTS ITS FAITH IN HOLY FILMS
Hollywood, long accused of promoting Godless amorality, has found religion. Studio executives are praying that a flood of Christian films will rescue them from a slump by performing miracles at the multiplex.
First into the cinemas will be The Da Vinci Code, starring Tom Hanks and Audrey Tatou, due for release next month. Some Catholics, upset by the plot of Dan Brown’s novel about Vatican conspiracies, are threatening to picket the film.
A Hollywood remake of the British cult film The Wicker Man remains in the balance as scriptwriters seek to “modernise” the film. In the 1973 version Scottish pagans triumph over Christianity, but the remake, starring Nicolas Cage, has to avoid offending 75m Americans who describe themselves as “born again”.

| Its Christians Want Good Movies Made | Apr 23rd. at 5:09:14 pm EDT

If the christians want good positive movies made about themselves, then maybe they should do something good instead of all they bad they have been doing for centries. The christians want hollywood to be thier propaganda machine, to make positive christian movies, so all thier horrible wrongs they have done will not look as bad as they are. Preists sexually abusing childern, preist killing nuns, christians picketing at gay and millitary funerals,. Yes they need some good propaganda these days. Just look at what films are doing the best, like Harry Potter, they are great films, great stories, and show a positive side to paganism, and christians hate that fact. They hate the fact that pagans are really coming out and that we are being shown in a positive fashion, which is true. They are in fear that people will convert to paganism and leave thier religion. Why do you think they are up in arms wanting the same positive things to be said about them. Its as I said before, pagans are not being corrupted by money, pagans are not sexually abusing childern, and pagans are not killing thier own people. Christains on the other hand can not say as much , can they.

Collect those movies you want while you may while this dearth lasts. Once thing is certain. The American tastelessness is as changeable as the wind. All this glut will prove is that the only thing truly holy- will be the money it took to waste film on them. As to the remake of the Wicker Man. Sit through it if you want, for curiosity's sake, but if you want a good version to own, get the original. Even the short version will be better than the probable travesty that will probably come out of this once they get through trying not to "offend" anyone.

"JJ Abrams, who created Lost, the series in which spiritual questions often arise, believes religion is highly topical. “Given all the conflict in the world inflamed by religion there is a real hunger for films that deal with these issues in fresh ways,” he said."
Yes, but there are other religions in the world, but you don't see any of them portrayed on film with such passion.
"....removed negative references to God and the Catholic Church. "
Countless films have been made with negative references to other religions, but no one saw it nessecary to remove those.
Whatever happend to movies as entertainment? apparently it doesn't even matter what the general populus thinks, as long as the religious leaders are happy.
Just once, I'd like to see a religion, other than Christianity cast in a positive, realistic light.
It almost seems like the church is afraid of losing its followers or something, with the way it's crammign religion down eveyone's throats. Look what happened with the "Passion". Most people I know couldn't even watch half of it, and yet the church was urging children as young as 8 to see it! Something's deffinately wrong with this picture.

One thing that made me go running through my apartment: THERE'S A SERIES OF MOVIES FOR HIS DARK MATERIALS!!! I love those books. I'm obsessed. I have never understood that they're so huge everywhere but here while here the obsession is Harry Potter, and yet, these are far better. Religion, a battle between good and evil (but the evil is religion) , a girl who is the New Eve and must fall to recreate the world, alternate realities, etc. I love these books. They're incredible. I am now sitting here quite patiently waiting for these books, but if they take out any of the controversial elements, I'll scream. On another note, if in the Wicker Man remake is one of those bring popcorn and laugh hysterically movies, it seems.

... duck, everyone! Here comes the wave! ...
... [sigh] ... poor, noble, downtrodden Christians ... evil nasty Pagans ... [sigh] ...
... maudlin, sentimental "recreations" of Christian myths ... Catholic-bashing [aren't THEY practically Pagans, anyway, as far as Christianity goes???] ...
... I do hope this wave passes soon ... [sigh] ... I don't know how much longer I can hold my breath! ...
