Romania Legalizes Witchcraft

Author: Sofia News Agency Source: Sofia News Agency (Bulgaria)

Title: ROMANIA LEGALIZES WITCHCRAFT
Romania's first official witch was registered Monday after months of negotiations with the government that finally introduced witchcraft as a legal occupation.
31-year-old Gabriela Chukur will stay in history as the country's first legal witch, after she registered a company dealing with "astrology and contacts with the spiritual world", media reported.
All over Eastern Europe women tend to believe in the powers of witches and some often resort to their help when settling a love score, healing a broken heart, or punishing a rival.

This is a bad article in six ways. First it equates witchcraft with vampirism, which is not uncommon. They misspell Transylvania (this way is most used) , and they make the Romanians sound like the silly, superstitious fools of the horror movies. Then they refer to the historical "Count" Dracula as a Transylvanian, when actually he was a Voivode and a Wallachian, although he was born in the Transylvanian town of Sighisoara. The sixth way the article was badly written was that the modern legends of vampirism really didn't get developed until 200 years after Vladislaus Dracula disappeared in battle. Romanians do or did actually believe that like King Arthur, Dracula would return when his people needed him most.

I do have to point out again what "witch" means around here and what most of those who call themselves as such really are, which has nothing to do with Pagans... ( Wrote a long comment about it here [Web LINK] ) . But this case seems pretty straightforward, it's her business and it's treated as such, fair enough. (Read the article Sorana posted a link to, my AV blocks the link to the one in English saying the site is trying to place a Trojan on my comp, so look out...)

The Romanian article (in Evenimentul Zilei) reads: "Witch Incorporated (21 April 2006) : Now, fortuneteller Gabriela issues tax-office approved receipts to anyone crossing the threshold of the fortunetelling office."
So... don't go queing up at the Romanian Embassy for residence visas yet! :)
