Bush Eases Environmental Rules On Gasoline

Author: Nedra Pickler, Associated Press Source: Yahoo

Title: BUSH EASES ENVIRONMENTAL RULES ON GASOLINE
President Bush on Tuesday ordered a temporary suspension of environmental rules for gasoline, making it easier for refiners to meet demand and possibly dampen prices at the pump. He also halted for the summer the purchase of crude oil for the government's emergency reserve.
Bush also announced steps to ease environmental standards governing fuel grades.
The moves came as political pressure intensified on Bush to do something about gasoline prices that are expected to stay high throughout the summer.
Easing the environment rules will allow refiners greater flexibility in providing oil supplies since they will not have to use certain additives such as ethanol to meet clean air standards.

Oh sure. Thanks. I may have to breathe dirty air from now on but I'll benefit with lower prices? Yeah, Right! When pigs really do go into orbit, perhaps! You can bet that easing those standards at the refinery won't do butkus for those paying at the pumps. Not when there's money to be made from our problems. He'll only think about what goes on here when the military starts making demands for a cheaper alternative. But in the meantime, those who have to commute are at the mercy of those prices.

A large part of the added price this year is because of legislation passed last year. Just changing the additives allowed threw a major monkey wrench in the distribution network.
And just so there is no confusion.
Average oil company profit on a gallon of gas - 7 cents
Federal tax on a gallon of gas - 18.4 cents
State taxes vary, but here is a handy chart.

The US is very dependant on oil unfortunatly and until the government gets it in their mind to change our way of fuel then it is going to continue that way for a long time. I know in Europe that gas prices are lower then over here, my ex lives over there now and was suprised at the price differences when it came to that, but one big difference that I have noticed has been mentioned is the public transportation system.
I live in an area that has 15 miles between towns on avarage, most work in the next town to two towns over to just feed their family, 15 to 30 miles a day is a lot to be driving to and from work every day. On top of that the nearest city is over 150 miles to get to, so it's a day trip just to go there and back. We don't have public buses out here or taxis, we have a van service but depending on where you want to go it could cost a person up to 5 dollars for just getting there, they base their price on gas prices, as those go up so do the van's service.
Then you factor in the fact that in my area the average job out here will start you at 5.15 an hour on up, the best job starts you at 8.00 an hour. So most people don't just work one job they work two normally driving from job to job.

The Oil Crunch is not going away, until Diesel costs as much as the Omega-3 Fatty Acids. We aren't finding new wells as quickly as we dry up the old, and sound practice is to save what's in the ground until the need is more desparate.
No more SUVs, nor Mega-Stores, and the added wait for the No-Fly List is really meant to send more people on Amtrak. See your local Mayor about installing Trolley Busses, which are better on hills, use Regenerative Breaking, and can run on Wind, as easily as Coal.
What personal transport do you Soccer Moms really need? If we reduce normal speeds by 75%, we can replace $4 of Gasoline with $4 of Butter. Bicycles are even healthier.

when our president and vice president are both heavily involved in oil companies?
You know, it's a sad thing when I make as much money as I do and I still can't afford to live...I live in a rural area so I can have my garden and stuff, so I must drive a minimum of 40 miles to the closest store. With gas prices as high as they are, I can't make my paycheck last until the next payday. What if my car breaks??

Not surprised. Der Fuhrer and his cronies have been trying to accelerate the Earth into a "doomsday" so their Jebus can come back sooner, and those of us with brains have to pay the price.

The shortsightedness of this administration never ceases to amaze me. Temporary solutions to problems like this will only create far more deadly problems down the road. It is the role of the government to push a nation forward in the right direction to overcome tough hurdles of change. Unfortunately the Bush administration is doing nothing but raising the height of that hurdle we must someday inevitably cross. When the government should be enforcing use of ethanol and rewriting the gas mileage standards for all motor vehicles, instead it engages in a terrible solution that will only hasten the onset of both global warming and a worldwide gas shortage. Shortsighted fools.
