Christian Foes Of 'Da Vinci Code' Debate How To Fight It

Author: Laurie Goodstein   Source: NY Times

Title: CHRISTIAN FOES OF 'DA VINCI CODE' DEBATE HOW TO FIGHT IT

Many Christian leaders across the country are girding themselves for battle with "The Da Vinci Code," the movie based on the blockbuster novel by Dan Brown that opens on May 19. Whether Roman Catholic or Protestant, Orthodox or evangelical, they agree that the book attacks the pillars of Christianity by raising doubts about the divinity of Jesus and the origins of the Bible.

Until recently, the prevailing strategy was to hitch on to the Da Vinci steamroller and use it as an opportunity for evangelism. For months, clergy have been giving their flocks books and DVD's debunking the novel, and some have even encouraged their congregants to see the movie with a nonbeliever.

But in recent weeks, calls for boycotts and protests have grown louder, from the Vatican to conservative Christian groups in the United States. They acknowledge that a boycott is not likely to make a dent at the box office, but say the co-optation strategy promoted by others will not adequately convey how offensive "The Da Vinci Code" is to their faith.

A third strategy now gaining currency is being called an "othercott" — urging people to see a different movie on the day "The Da Vinci Code" opens, like "Over the Hedge," an animated family feature.

The Day Of Reckoning.. May 13th. at 6:10:45 am EDT

Taliesin (Northgate, Washington) - Email Me

has arrived for Christians. They must be so angry they can't burn anyone at the stake over this. Why protest the release of this movie at all if there is nothing to hide?

Wait till the movie The Beast by Brian Fleming comes out on 06/06/06! They're really going to have a fit then!

Thoughts May 12th. at 10:11:38 pm EDT

Skye Silverstar (Edmonton, British Columbia) - Email Me

My thoughts are this.

1. Didn't the catholic church already get a big kick in the booty when someone went and found the dead sea scrolls? They lived through that, so whats their worry?

2. "What would Jesus think?" The guy probably thinks, 'who gives a **** about what anyone else thinks? It's what the BELIEVERS believe that matters to me!'

3. Who believes the bible anyway? They keep changing the darn thing. For example the famous sentence 'suffer not a witch....' is really 'suffer not a POISONER..."
And they got the birth of Jesus himself wrong. 5 years wrong. And wrong season.
AND someone added the whole crucifiction bit about 200 years after the eledged event happened, thinking it was more dramatic that Jesus' actual death by stoning. Or how about how they added the story of Lilith for awhile there, as an example of how wrong women can be, then removed it because it was giving us females 'ideas'.

Baaahhh!

My Theory... May 12th. at 10:06:54 am EDT

Lady-hearted Mojo (Irving, Texas) - Email Me

Here's my theory, for what it is worth, regarding why the Xtians have had their panties in a bunch over this book for the last three years and have gone bullistic over the movie.
Most of Christianity and it's followers, to some degree or another, base their beliefs on literal interpretation of Scripture. (Please note that I'm talking about the average Christian, not the esoteric or mystical Christian who understands the difference between symbolism and literialism quite well.) The more fundamentalist the sect the more literal that interpretation will be. This is the reason why a religion like Buddhism would survive even if the Buddha were found to never have existed, unlike Christianity which would probably collapse if it was found that Christ never existed.
TDC calls into play doubt and questioning of the very foundation of Christian belief. If people believe that it was even possible that JC and MM were married and had a family then it is possible that they (the Christians) have been wrong all along and the last thing a literalist Christian can tolerate is the idea that their religion might be wrong.
From our point of view the protesting is probably only to to make Ron Howard and Dan Brown even wealthier, but if you think like they do then this type of action makes perfect sense.

"and now some Christian leaders are asking why Christians should be expected to sit by while the media promotes a movie that insults their savior."

Taste of their own medicine, perhaps? They arrogantly look down upon everyone else and insult other's beliefs, yet they don't like getting treated the same way? Typical.

These people need to learn to distinguish between fiction and non-fiction, fantasy and reality. If they cannot understand such simple things, perhaps they shouldn't be opening their mouths.
I can't imagine what they would do if they actually studied history and archaeology in relation to ancient religion. Talk about fighting back with scholarship! Oh, wait. They simply dismiss historical facts with, "It's a lie of the devil!", unless, of course, it furthers their own agenda. Silly me, what was I thinking...

Fighting Divine Feminine: In Private And In Public May 12th. at 12:19:09 am EDT

karrie9 (Kenosha, Wisconsin) - Email Me - Web

In private, some fight, denigrate, confuse, and otherwise overwhelm the female they live with. [Web LINK]

In the religious-political arena (everything is poltical) , those fixated on the Male Divine (The One and Only God the Father) deny and fight the reality of the Female Divine.

Emotional Abuse May Include (Adapted for this topic) :

**Ridiculing**/minimizing/denying others' divine nature, religion, culture, traditions, and personal tastes or presenting them as less than noble, sane, "saved," or educational.
**Punishing**/blocking any revolt.
Refusing to clarify or leading to mislead/misinform by omission, head games, crazy making or other games with the truth (they may claim to have THE truth) .

The interesting thing is that you can see the likes of the above mentioned in discussions of the Power and Control Wheels used to educate about various relationships and abuse -- usually domestic violence. Example: [Web LINK] , see paragraph H for brief clarification.

Let Them Boycott May 11th. at 10:30:58 pm EDT

Erihu (Sunset Beach, North Carolina) - Email Me

It certainly didn't hurt Disney, it won't hurt this movie, either. Might actually boost the tickets sales, methinks. I read at least one comment posted here about someone going to go see the movie now, when they weren't planning on it. As someone else pointed out, when somethng offends me, I simply choose not to read/see it. I don't try to keep everyone else from it. They just don't understand that they don't have the right to not be offended. No one does. As the saying goes 'just put on your big girl panties, and deal with it'.

Interesting Book...... May 11th. at 10:15:18 pm EDT

Shadow Star (Sebring, North Carolina) - Email Me

I was impressed with the accurate info on Pagans. At least this writer did some research first. Not very impressed with the Jesus/Mary Magdelene/children angle though. I heard that for the first time about 35 years ago - learned it from some Mormon friends of mine. Can't understand the uproar over a book of fiction. What about the serious books that have propossed this theory?

It's A Story!! May 11th. at 9:52:55 pm EDT

Mysteries Child (Garfield, West Virginia) - Email Me

A story!! A work of fiction!! Can no one regard it as such?? Honestly-- I haven't even read the stupid friggin' book!! There are plenty of other places to read about Yeshua having a relationship with Mary Magdalene...

...and we all know what birth control was like in those days ;-)

I really fail to understand how this possibility defames "Jesus Christ." Is His message somehow worth less because He might have loved and made love?? Is Christianity's "God-made-flesh" Savior somehow worth less because He was, in fact, fully and truly human??

I thought He was worth so much precisely *because* He was fully and truly human. Guess that shows what I know.

Sheesh. This movie should really be banned, and every copy of the book rounded up and burned, at a stake if possible (**sarcasm**) . Goodness only knows what will happen if people see it. Next, they'll be entertaining the possibility that we're all the sons and daughters of God. After that, they could even move on to think that living a Christ-like life isn't a proposal utterly out of their reach after all.

Oh, the horror! The horror!

Sue? Over This? May 11th. at 9:49:01 pm EDT

Sickle (Mt. Jackson, Virginia) - Email Me

Oh yes, let us all sue workers of fiction because we don't like what they say. What a splendid world that would be!

In other news, the Christians think "Harry Potter" teaches children about Wicca.

When are they going to realize that this is in the "fiction" section of bookstores for a reason?

Makes You Wonder May 11th. at 6:14:51 pm EDT

Aliana Soulfire (Anaheim, California) - Email Me

Indeed, I agree with one of the people's comments here....are the christians so angry because this might just be truth? Does the Vatican have the chunk of Jesus life missing from the bible hidden in their lil building? They sound like someone angry because they've been discovered. How silly. Note to christians :Remove head from sphincter. Life is much better that way. And they most certainly want to sound like they're being persecuted....imagine this, if you will.....there's the pope, in his fine silk garments, with someone standing by to take his plates when he's done eating at the fifty foot long dining table...and yet another person standing there to wipe his chin of the soup that has dribbled down it...and yet one more standing there, asking him what they should do about the "blasphemous" movie...he says they're being persecuted...ha, like the ***ing peeps in the Vatican are losing sleep on their satin sheets...they have more money than they know what to do with, and yet they complain of being persecuted? Give that money you use to pay that expensive chef instead to some homeless shelters, or towards a program to provide more jobs...that's doing something worthwhile....

Besides May 11th. at 3:56:00 pm EDT

Llunmere (Germantown Hills, Illinois) - Email Me

It's about time they took some insults. Even their lord knows they don't. Trials and tribulations make the flock stronger, I've been told. It's about time they took a little of what they've been dishing out. And they should take it gracefully, thankful that it comes in the relatively harmless form of a movie rather than an Old Testament-style plague.

Ha! May 11th. at 3:51:55 pm EDT

Looks to me like a chance to make up lost revenue at the box office for those who boycotted Passion of the Christ

I Wasn't Too Impressed By The Book.. May 11th. at 2:24:44 pm EDT

Lynette (Roanoke, Virginia) - Email Me

and wasn't planning to waste $10 on the movie, but now I think I'll just have to go see it. "Doing my bit to p***off the Religious Right"

He Has A Point .. Sort Of May 11th. at 2:09:20 pm EDT

Saskia (Lowell, Massachusetts) - Email Me

"The debate has been colored by the Muslim riots over Danish cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad. Most American media outlets refrained from showing the cartoons, and now some Christian leaders are asking why Christians should be expected to sit by while the media promotes a movie that insults their savior.

In Rome recently, Archbishop Angelo Amato, the No. 2 official in the Vatican's doctrinal office, told Catholic communications officials: "If such slanders, offenses and errors had been directed at the Koran or the Holocaust, they would have justly provoked a world uprising. Instead, directed at the Church and Christians, they remain unpunished. I hope you will all boycott the movie.""

I hate to say this, but I agree with the Archbishop ... in a round about way (remarks about the Holocaust not withstanding)

I believe that the cartoons of Prophet Muhammad should have been distributed freely and let the broken PC chips of the offended fall where they may.

I think all this hullabaloo gives those who DO actually suffer from religious discrimination a perfect example to say - "See! You didn't like it when it happened to you. Stop doing it to other people!!"

Of course, we all know that isn't going to happen, but at least now we have precedent … again *rolls eyes & sighs*
