Top California Court Supports Gay Marriage

Author: Reuters Source: Reuters

Title: TOP CALIFORNIA COURT SUPPORTS GAY MARRIAGE
The California Supreme Court overturned a ban on same-sex marriages on Thursday in a major victory for gay rights advocates that will allow gay and lesbian couples to marry in the most populous U.S. state.
The court found that California laws limiting marriage to heterosexual couples are at odds with rights guaranteed by the state's constitution. Opponents of gay marriage vowed to contest the ruling with a statewide ballot measure.

Lady Arrian (Cincinnati, Ohio) - Email Me

Now if the rest of the States would follow suit. I saw this on TV and one of the women they spoke to had been with her partner for 19 years, I think she (and all gays and lesbians) has just much right to marry her partner as I did my husband. Too bad this is going to get the fundies in a froth about "family values." I always find it laughable when they go on about how same-sex marriage undermines family values and will cause a break down of society...There is no prove that this will happen, for that fact there seems to be prove of the opposite.

same sex marriage needed this push. there is no logical reason for denying so many gay men and women the right to marry other than for the reason of it goes against the beliefs, religious or otherwise. lets face it, we are actually a Republic, which means that all governing laws are to be met out with no bias against a majority or minority. The judges actually did what they are supposed to do, regardless if a majority or religious base says that a certain segment of citizens are not worthy or warrant equal treatment. I've been amused by the religious right screaming about the "Leftist judges". actually, the majority of the judges on the California Supreme Court are Republican, appointed by Arnold. also my favorite, "activist judges" Translation, the judges didn't support my opinion. TOO BAD!!! what saddens, angers, and astounds me is that some religious groups think that their political and religious beliefs should trump the constitution. Equality is exactly that...being Equal.
to end,i'd like to quote the Justice Minister of Canada;
"Human Rights should never be left up to a popularity contest. Civil Rights should never be a matter of public opinion."

Orion 6Xray (Park City, Kentucky) - Email Me - Web

Even with the economy collapsing and the Dems failing to fullfill their mandate and end the war, none of that is going to matter to the "we can't let the homosexuals have equal rights crowed".
This just injected and constitutional non-issue, because if the constitution was truely followed the we wouln't have half the problems we do in this country, into a crap fest already on fire.
Way to go dill weeds, you just shot yourselves in the foot. If this was brought up in a non-election year it would probibly make it cause the gay rights crowd could mount a responce to what the hate mongers are mounting in November. But six months before an election, you may have just killed the gay rights movement with this court ruleing. The fundies are some heartless vendictive trolls and you just slapped them in the face on live t.v. so get ready for a dirty fight.

Katmandu (elba, Alabama) - Email Me

Is there some way I can get those folks to come here? I'd love to see Alabama overthrow its bass-ackwards image and adopt such a law. Of course, I'll probably be worm-food before that happens. But do you really want to know one seriously messed up thing? Just because Calif. and Mass. will recognize these unions doesn't mean that the rest of the states will. That includes Alabama.. If history has taught us anything, it shows us that Ala. will only do something it doesn't like if forced. And even then, they will fight tooth and nail and gun.

Gay marriage will only lead to the total breakdown of civilization.. I mean look at Canada, total anarchy.... Riots in the streets, burning buildings... And now California is to join with such rabble... how they rush to their own doom.

For once, I am proud to be Californian :] Seriously, I was so happy when I found out that now my mom thinks I'm gay... But what a wonderful thing! I'm so happy for all the gay couples that can marry now. They deserve it.

Gays are not only people, but American citizens who vote, hold down jobs and live under the same laws as the rest. They should be treated with the same equality as any other person, And as for Marriage, it is just a contract between two consenting adults in a join relationship, whether or not it results in children. While it bothers me that Arnie opposes this issue, he at least will abide by the State Supreme Court in this decision. So that can't be all bad.
