Pagans Prepare For Preschool

Author: Harrison Baker   Source: Ashland Daily Tidings (OR)

Title: PAGANS PREPARE FOR PRESCHOOL

Ashland's Rowan Tree Pagan Ministries may literally put the magic back in childhood this fall.

Rowan Tree Director of Children's Programs Selyna Faola'n plans to offer Rowan Academy, a preschool and kindergarten program for children ages 3 to 5, starting Sept. 22. The program can proceed if it meets an enrollment minimum of 10 students, but Faola'n said she could go ahead with as few as seven.

Faola'n has taught at the preschool level for 20 years. She designed her Rowan Academy curriculum to emphasize the general basics of reading, writing and arithmetic. Her classes will also include age-appropriate lessons in natural cycles, the planets and the elements.

"Our program is designed for everyone," she said.

Funnest? She's a teacher! At the very least, if you cannot speak well, get your grammar right.

"A Religious Background Of Any Kind Is A Positive Aug 1st. at 5:37:29 pm EDT

Jenna (Cary, North Carolina) - Email Me

Thing"? Hmm, I wonder how many on this site would agree that it would be positive to raise one's daughter as a strict Muslim who feels responsible if she is raped? Or as a strict Catholic who must endure birth after birth because the faith does not allow for birth control? Or as an Evangelical who feels that her body is inferior to those of boys (men, after all, were created in God's image, and women in the image of men) and that contracting a sexual disease is preferable to preparing for sexual activity? I hope that everyone can see where I am going with this: brainwashing your children with your faith (and that's what it is, folks, pure and simple) should not be a right of parenthood and is definitely not a duty.
When a child is baptised in the Christian faith, his/her soul is promised for all eternity to the Christian belief system. That's the honest truth. Should parents have the right to decide the spiritual path of their child a few weeks after his/her birth? When a bris (ritual Jewish circumcision) is performed, a baby boy is cut and has to suffer without his consent because his parents want to promise him to the Jewish communtiy for the rest of his life. Is that fair or right? And of course, many Muslim children are so spiritual abused in the name of their religion that they see Jews and Westerners as being Satanic beasts, and women as walking pieces of filth. We need to stop this; not to follow their example. Am I upset that my parents brainwashed me? HELL YEAH!! It could had been worse; they could had been Evangelicals or Jehovah's Witnesses rather than a Catholic and a Jew. Still, I've seen my brothers sliced up in the name of religion, and my sister and I still suffer from sexual disfunction due to the dogma of the RCC. I am raising my children to have access to all faiths and the pressure of none. My older son has declared himself an atheist after having examined all of the nonsense in the various faiths, and my younger one wants to be Jewish like his grandfather. These are their choices. They know that I do ritual and they are welcome to join, but once they saw that being a witch isn't as thrilling as Harry Potter they lost interest. Once again, please, please, please, parents let your children decide for themselves. Otherwise, you honestly aren't any better than those freaks on "Jesus Camp". Shalom.

I would have my daughter in this school so fast I would se fire to the enrollment papers lol!

actually I am really pleased about this, and while I understand some of the comments consternation about "choosing" for your child their religous beliefs, we as parents are called to do exactly that.

Most baptism or introduction ritual mentions "raising your child acording to our belief structures" And while I was a catholic once I am not now. I don't fault my parents, on the contrary they did all required of them to raise me and know the faith that they chose. I went through a very difficult period of being angry at Catholicism but now I understand. They gave me the knowledge and skills to know HOW to look for what satisfied me even if it does not agree with their belief. Any faith taken truly will help tremendously when it feels as though you have nowhere to turn. I have a resposibility to my daughter to raise her with the norms and values that I hold important in our lives here. She will need to know that equality, and concience, and mercy and understanding are important, Hate and fear are not what I want to foster in her. And if we had that school here, I'd work two jobs just to send her.

I Think It's Great Aug 1st. at 1:58:17 pm EDT

Grey Catling (Utica, New York) - Email Me

While I agree that Pagan parents need to give their children the religious freedom they themselves wished to receive from their parents, I fully believe that a religious background of any kind is a positive thing. I was made to attend a Catholic preschool and then went on to public school. While I eventually left the Catholic church, I have no regrets about the most basic values and lessons that I learned. I think it's healthy and natural to teach your children about your own religion. I would rather send my children to an open-minded Pagan school than a public school - most of which are becoming increasingly close-minded and intolerant of religion, especially alternative religions. I hope the people setting up this school have success!

A Former Christian School Attendee. . . Aug 1st. at 1:55:36 pm EDT

I remember going to a very strict CHristian School when I was in High School. They had all these "outings", basically standing on street corners in local towns holding signs like "Know God, Know Peace, NO God NO peace." and such. I wish that there was a Pagan school like this here in my hometown, but since the Central Valley is largely conservative and Bible-thumpers (in the WORST sense) , I can't really see it ever happening. Unless it was an UNDERGROUND thing, and it was only know to a select few.

I don't think that a Pagan School can really be considered "Indoctorination" tho. It is merely like a 5 day long "Sunday School", and the Christians have their schools that do the same. The great thing about it is, that if you don't like, it, it is a PRIVATE school, and you don't have to enroll your child in it.

The sad thing is that it most likely won't last very long. I can't see a school that appeals to such a small amount of the popluation of a town, actually doing well. Sure, they might do well as JUST a preschool for a while, but the student will grow up, and I cant see a stream of preschool aged children to the Wiccan/Pagan community. Kind of a fits and starts thing. Mayhap I am wrong. . .

While I Wish Them Well... Jul 31st. at 10:37:09 pm EDT

I can tell you as someone who attend religious (Catholic) schools for most of my education that it was such a breath of fresh air to be exposed to the Public School system and all of the students with their various ethnicities and beliefs. If Pagans want to prove that they're more openminded and tolerant than Christians then they need to allow their children to choose their own path in life without any prodding from the parents. If the children are meant to hear the call of the Goddess, they will (I did in a Catholic boarding school) . Schools should be for learning about reading, writing, literature, science, math, and languages. In other words, academics. Religion should be explored and discovered by the individual. Indoctrinating children in any form in highly distasteful to me. Sorry if that isn't the common opinion.

And remember that many journey's begin with just one step. Let us hope this endeavor is successful, so that other similar schools can be started in communities around the nation and globe.

Hčl, if Christians can start charter schools then we as pagans and heathens should be able to as well.

Fight with knowledge, not in ignorance.

on this venture and I pray fervently that they will be successful.
However, look toward being harrassed by the holier than thou types that would complain about this-- but not about a so-called pre -school "jesus camp" that would make a marine DI cringe in fear.
