“Vampires" In Hampton Roads

Author: Katie Collett Source: Wavy.com (VA)

Title: "VAMPIRES" IN HAMPTON ROADS
They're Blockbuster hits and number one best sellers. We're talking about movies and books about vampires and even Satan worshipping. Casting crews make the lead character look handsome and appealing, but local sheriff officials say they discovered a connection with those movies and recent crime in the area. So, they contacted 10 On Your Side to alert parents of the problem. A 10 On Your Side investigation confirmed investigators' fears of this disturbing growing trend.
It might be hard to believe or even uncomfortable or scary to hear, but through our investigation we heard experts say vampires are real and they're living right here in Hampton Roads. Even more shocking is how easily your child can get sucked into their culture without you knowing it.
Twilight is a popular book, transformed into a popular movie, but it's not just a story anymore. For some, it's become reality.

For everyone's information, I was stationed in NAS Oceana for a couple years (1998 - 2000) . We were dragged, kicking and screaming, from NAS Cecil Field by those idiots in Congress who couldn't be bothered to take their expensive private jets all the way down to sunny Florida. While I was there, I was accosted by both the local bumpkins and the police for wearing a pentacle. I'm not going into the details, but (as I've stated) I avoid Virginia like the plague.
In fact, I mentioned just a few things wrong with Virginia here: [Web LINK]

Yea, over the years I've had fun verbally sparring with Don over his incorrect "facts", and outrageous statements he makes with absolutely no source to back any of it up. I could spend an eternity pointing out all the holes in his arguments, but Kerr seems to have done that already (and verry well I might add) . This "news story" is yet another chance to fill up a slow news week.
I do take issue with comments making out people in Va to all be ignorant bumkins. No sorry, The Hampton Roads area has a pretty sizable Pagan community, not to mention one of the largest and longest running Drum Circles in the US. Many Pagans who serve in our Armed Forces are based here. I've found it to be a pretty tolerant place in general. Yea, you occasionally find intolerant jerks but you will get that anywhere. The police are quite aware of us, namely because some of us are the police! LOL!
And, Most of the Vampires I know are well adjusted people. Most do not drink blood, and don't all walk around in black and live in mom and dad's basement. I've run across lawyers and accountants (gives a new meaning to the term "bloodsucker,LOL) . And yes, there are Wiccan Vampires. Check out the book Vampires in their own words by Michelle Bellanger.
Peace be unto you all!

This article is why WitchVox needs Fark-style tags. "Virginia" would easily get its own tag due to the amount of "Burning Times"-related news that comes out of there.
In any case, nice to see Pat "Alzheimer's" Robertson's backyard is still ripe with ignorant bumpkins. The vampires I know ask permission before feeding either psychically or sanguinarily. You stay classy, Virginia.
And I should point this out: There are people out there who claim anyone who thinks of themselves as a "witch" is crazy.

is the most mind numbing (porn for women really) brain rotting garbage in the world. No form of plot is ever really offered. What the reader gets instead is sapppy non prose. Virginia is a lot more scenic and natural than the filth ridden Bronx. Oh, and anyone who thinks that they are a vampire is a moron of the highest order.

The local Sherrif's Office is too lazy to investigate a crime so they blame the occult, and the parents in this story are not doing their parental jobs so they need to blame it on something and the rest is just rumors.
If they get anymore attention, they will soon define anyone who is not a xtian, a vampire or witch and the burnings will start.

Someone else has already covered the whole 'occult crime expert' thing so I won't.
These sorts of articles really worry me, because it spreads a very dangerous paranoia. Did you read the list of 'signs' to look out for in your kids? :
"Look for self mutilation, numbers and letters written backwards, mysterious new friends, or an occultic-themed style like dark clothing and make-up. Rimer says 666 is the number associated with satanism and the number 7 is associated with vampires."
Ok, firstly plenty of people self harm without any occult involvement. If your child is self harming they need love and support, not accusations that they are a vampire. I used to write letters and numbers backwards for fun when I was a kid, it's quite a skill to do it so that what you write is readable if you hold a mirror to it (and I'm fairly sure I remember something about Da Vinci doing this) . Any kid who makes new friends should of course be suspected. As should any teen who decides that black suites them.
All this is going to do is lead to ridiculous paranoia.
Did anyone read the news article about the girl this article is claiming got had her dad killed by her vampire buddies? If you actually read it there's a lot of questions about what really happened, and what the group were really up to. But of course lets not let facts stand in the way of a good 'news' story.
Of course the vampire subculture has it's share of weirdos, and given the high prevalence of varying degrees of mental illness in the general population it's probably not inaccurate to say that some people within that group have some form of mental illness. For the same reasons It would also not be inaccurate to say that some people within that group commit crimes. That doesn't however mean that everyone within that group is dangerously psychotic and likely to commit crimes.
Sigh, rant over, I'm sure all this has occurred to people anyway.

Nocturnal Light (Camp Humphreys, Rep. Korea) - Email Me

Once again, people choose to get paranoid over the sensational symptom than actually look for the source of the problem. The Vampire books didn't make the girl go "crazy". Something drew the girl to become obsessed with them to an extreme degree. Perhaps she was lacking in a healthy social life or spiritual direction. Maybe she just wanted more attention.
Fiction is man made, and only has as much power to control as a person lets it. People cause the problem, not the fiction they turn into delusion to try to escape the problem.
But unfortunately many people would rather put their energy to creating a sensational news story rather than actually try to help people.

Sabaean (Metairie, Louisiana) - Email Me

Kerr Cuhulain exposted Don Rimer back in 2002 on Witchvox article listed below:
"Don Rimer is a self proclaimed ‘occult crime expert’ with the Virginia Beach Police Dept. When he first started out (about 10 years ago) he was an OK guy. He just wanted to catch criminals and I am down with that. There was a murder in Virginia Beach that was definitely occult related, and he came to me for help identifying some of the symbols at the crime scene. He did the same thing in 1996 when there was a disappearance/ murder in the Vampire sub culture. I went into their culture and fished out info for him.
When he started speaking publicly, he made it real clear that actual "occult crimes" were very rare, and he used to give a fair explanation of Paganism and Wicca.
He got A LOT of media attention due to his involvement in the Vampire case and other high profile cases he was ‘consulted’ on. Basically, some cop from somewhere in the country would call him for advice about an ‘occult crime’ ...and then he would call me with questions. ...which was cool.
Then around 1998-1999 he started getting offered money to speak at various conferences... usually sponsored by Fundy Christians. His speeches got more and more extreme over the years as he tried to please the Fundy Christian crowd that gives him big bucks. Now to hear him tell it ‘occult crime’ is a big problem. One of his favourite tricks is to have himself ‘emergency paged’ during a speech, disappear briefly on the phone, then come back and announce to his audience ‘that call was about an occult crime I am currently working on.’
We haven't had an "occult crime" in his jurisdiction in 5 years.
He still calls me from time to time, but I will not help him at this point unless he shows me proof that physical harm has been done to someone first. Towards the end of the 90's I found out he was using some of the info I gave him in his talks AFTER twisting it around quite a bit. He doesn't know sh*t about the occult himself.”
