Author Wrote The Handbook On Being Goth

Author: Laura Casey   Source: Contra Costa Times

Title: AUTHOR WROTE THE HANDBOOK ON BEING GOTH

Seattle-based author Jillian Venters's new book, "Gothic Charm School" (Harper, $13.99), is the ultimate handbook to being, and understanding, the Gothic subculture. A Goth since age 6 when she told her grandparents she wanted to be a witch from the "Wizard of Oz" but wear only black, Venters answered a few of our questions about the Gothic subculture.

Q: How does someone come out Goth to their parents?

A: If people are really lucky, their parents just kind of figure it out. My parents had no doubt how I was going to turn out after seeing me read vampire novels and deciding that I wanted to be a witch or a vampire. For other kids who are trying to come out to their parents, they should just sit them down and say, "Hey, this is the subculture I am interested in." Ask Mom and Dad if they've got questions. Frequently if you just talk to parents and say, "These are the things I like and what questions can I answer for you?" parents tend to be OK with it.

Love Gothic Charm School Jul 4th. at 9:11:07 pm EDT

Sadly I couldn't read the article about this, so I apologize for not being able to comment on the actual article.

But I own and just finished Gothic Charm School. I highly recommend this book. I have been an avid reader of gothic-charm-school.com and find her take on what it is to be Goth very pleasing. I've been both Goth and Pagan for a few years now and its just nice to see the Gothic lifestyle portrayed properly.

I myself am not Goth but I've known a few Goths and got on with them fine. If a person wishes to incorporate Goth and Paganism then they have every right to do so.

Personally I don't think your personal preferences should really affect your standing in the community but too many people today are way too superficial. Goth can look scary to someone who knows nothing about it. However after being friends with one Muslim Goth, one Christian Goth and one Agnostic Goth I actually feel okay with Goths and I have learned to accept that other people have different tastes to myself.

Maybe I should rephrase. Fluffbunnies should actually SPEAK to someone who's been goth for about five or ten years before incoherently shooting their mouths off.

Most goths I've known irl completely miss the point. Yes, everything ends eventually, and everyone dies. Even me. Even you. These things are true.

The point is not to get all angsty, write bad poetry, dress like something out of a B grade horror movie, pretend to be a vampire, take mascara and eyeliner use to the point of an addiction, etc.

The point is to enjoy the good things (and people!) while you have them. If you do not, you only render yourself doubly deprived in the end. The point is to awknowledge that change is the way of the world. Nothing is permanent: neither joy nor sorrow, life nor death. If this were not the case, existence itself would come to a screeching halt, complete stasis would reign, and growth would be impossible.

Very good Goth 101 article. The fluffbunnies who consider Wicca and goth incompatible with one another need to RTFA.
