Battle Brewing Over Command Authority

Author: Megan Scully, CongressDaily   Source: Government Executive

Title: BATTLE BREWING OVER COMMAND AUTHORITY

A Pentagon proposal to give the federal government greater authority to mobilize and command Army, Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps Reserve units during domestic disasters and emergencies is on a collision course with National Guard boosters on Capitol Hill who favor giving governors tactical control over those federal military forces and Guard troops.

The proposal was drafted as a possible amendment to the fiscal 2010 defense authorization bill. It would empower the Defense secretary to call federal Reserve forces to active duty for disaster response. Current law prohibits such forces from being activated to respond to natural disasters.

Under the Pentagon's proposal, federal reservists -- as opposed to National Guard personnel who are ordinarily under state control -- would operate at the direction of the president.

As someone who lived through Katrina and the aftermath - there is NO reason that the federal government should have total control. As I recall, FEMA (yeah, that lovely federal program) was more concerned with the media preferred disaster than the people who NEEDED them more. Bush showed Mississippi and Alabama what happens when a natural disaster strikes and the president chooses who gets the help.

Though the hurricane actually struck the Mississippi and Alabama coasts, even though entire cities were destroyed on the Mississippi gulf coast, the federal organizations all focused their attention on New Orleans - a town that wouldn't have had a problem if their governor had put the money earmarked for the levies into said levies. If it hadn't been for Mississippi's governor, we'd have had no help for a week. A WEEK. Because Mississippi doesn't rate high enough on the media's list of news-worthy places. And let's face it, those are usually the places that get the attention. Prime example, how many people honestly know that the hurricane didn't hit New Orleans? Not many. How many people in Mississippi and Alabama STILL have damage nearly four years later? Hundreds, if not thousands. You can drive through most cities in south Mississippi and still see blue roof tarps. Because they didn't get the help they needed, and their insurance companies ripped them off.

Whoo. Sorry about the length of the comment. But I get worked up about stuff like this. And the anniversary is coming up on Saturday.

Brightest blessings.

that the military (other than a very few who have no direction) , is made up of people who CHOSE to be a part of it. They were and STILL ARE free thinking beings. If you honestly think that they would not balk at the concept of taking over our country, then you need to get your head on straight before you start reacting like the very type of people we tend to talk about on this site. There are many of us, everywhere, that would fight a scenario like that. Though I am in agreement in a few things, the National Guard was CREATED for this purpose, they need to be brought back or at least put on shorter tours so that there are plenty here for these disasters that crop up. The Government should never have began using them the way they have been for this current situation.

The Army's on its way......

And the Army goes rolling along.....

I want to know who are they rolling over?

To all the military men and women out there, past and present, you better remember this and know that this is what YOU are truely sworn to uphold..

"I, (your name here) , do solemly swear to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America. Against all enemies forgine and DOMESTIC.."

You loyalty is with the Constitution and the PEOPLE of this country, not the beurocrats, charismatic leaders, and the power hungry would be tyrants.

1) Disarm the citizenry.
2) Get a charismatic retard to function as a leader to claim a foreign power is attacking us.
3) Mobilize the military.

Can someone tell me what step 4 is?

A Balance Of Power Must Remain Aug 24th. at 7:18:34 pm EDT

Nocturnal Light (Camp Humphreys, Rep. Korea) - Email Me

The reason the United States has never suffered a dictatorship or military coup in all of its history is because of all the intricate checks and balances between sections of government, so no one authority can trump all the others. Putting the entire military under federal control threatens that balance.
