Schools Campaign To Improve Image Of Owls

Author: Lindie Whiz Source: New Zimbabwe

Title: SCHOOLS CAMPAIGN TO IMPROVE IMAGE OF OWLS
An international charity is tackling an age old belief in parts of Zimbabwe – that the sighting of an owl or the sound of its hoot is a harbinger of bad luck, ill health, or death.
Birdline International, through its Zimbabwe chapter, is launching a campaign in schools across the country – hoping to change the public’s view of the much-loathed bird.
Rueben Njolomole, BirdLife Zimbabwe’s Education Officer said: “There are a lot of myths around owls which are mostly, if not all, untrue.
Birdlife Zimbabwe officials were shocked when they conducted initial surveys at schools to find out what pupils thought of owls.

To counter any bad luck, whenever one hears an owl-any owl, just make a wish for wisdom or for an answer to a particular problem. Owls are also used as symbols of wisdom in some cultures and if one stresses this, the image of owls may eventually change.

The problem is not that people in Africa (and other countries) see owls as "harbingers of bad luck and death" -- it is that many of those people will try to kill owls because of that superstition, without understanding the actual role owls play in the local ecology (and often the local economy) .
Speaking of superstition... Isn't a belief in a "Lord" and a "Lady" just another "silly superstition"? Before y'all start throwing electronic bricks, I happen to know that when a person hears an owl outside their window, it is foretelling bad luck.
It's up to the listener to understand just what kind of "bad luck" is being foretold.

Africa, it seems has much more of its own image to improve than just owls, but it's a start.
