Wicca And Witchapalooza!

Author: Paul Dale Roberts   Source: Sacramento Press (CA)

Title: WICCA AND WITCHAPALOOZA!

Did you ever wonder how much of Wicca can be traced to the Celts? Wicca is a religion based on ancient northern European Pagan beliefs in a fertility Goddess and her consort a horned God.

The religion is a modern creation and some of its sources pre-date the Christian era by many centuries. Most Wiccans do not believe that their religion is a direct continuous descendent of this earlier religion. They see it as a modern reconstruction.

It's a reconstruction. In fact the same could be said of a great many religions including christianity, which -in itself- is a hodge-podge of myths and legends from other various peoples.
Silver Ravenwolf does have a place on my shelf, but she is one of many others. I take all that I read with a grain of salt, but I don't discount everything as invalid. That is why I always keep reading.

Author Bashing Oct 14th. at 11:51:32 am EDT

Any artist - whether it be an author or a musician or other will start at the beginning and progressively get better with their material.

Do any of you remember watching a child just learning to walk?
We all were there and noone is really laughing at many babies and ridiculing them for not doing what you expect the first few times.

Anyone who has to publicly ridicule any author needs to be performing some deep spiritual work in order to cure the extreme amounts of insecurity that they, themselves, hold.

Anyone who may write a book, a song, or what have you and manages to work through all of the material they are having published, walk their path daily, and basicly work their a$$es off to practice what they preach - after all a Witch is only as good as their word - should be respected.

You may not agree with them - but public ridicule is spreading poison and hatred for only a mere opinion. We've all hear about opninions - they're like @$$holes - everyone has one and most of them stink.

I tend to wonder how many of the people who do this have not been ridiculed themselves and have not managed to work those feelings out.
After all, abuse victims to tend to be abusers themselves.

I think a lot of author bashers should hold their tongue until they too have put in such work and determination as it would take to even land a publishing deal in the first place.

Oh . . . and get to know yourself. It is one of the first rules you should have learned - unless you're reading into these books what you want any way and picking and plugging in what you think works rather than putting in the discipline to actually learn something that someone who came before you tries to teach that is tried and true.

Take what you want and leave the rest - but at least learn about what you don't agree with.
Otherwise, other readers or people you are talking to are probably getting the impression that they are listening to just another ignorant, immature person flapping their gums.

She is right in that Wicca NOW is around 50 years old, starting from a mix of Crowley and Gardner. This is acceptable fact now to anyone who actually knows the history of Wicca.

As much as some can criticize Ravenwolf ( and deservably so) , let's be honest here. In the early seventies when we had people claiming Wicca was a " survival" of the old religion and that they claimed they were Fam Trads with ( ahem) Books of Shadows being passed down from the Burning Times to today. Now we see much of the claims of those days as, to be honest, rubbish. Does anyone remember that the era of feminist women's history where some Wiccans actually went the Margaret Murray route?

AFAIK Ravenwolf is big on the environmental activism now. Granted she has written some bad books such as her Teen Witch book ( which had shockingly bad advice) but she is just as valid as D.J. Conway or any other Pagan author you can name.

Face it, we have had Pagans who when they go public make us look like idiots. And sadly some of the Pagan idiots/jerks/annoying little snots are also active online. There are worse people than Ravenwolf.

No, because it isn't much.

Well well well...looks like the much-maligned Silver Ravenwolf's "fluffy" reputation is, as I've said for the past several years, is undeserved. If people would bother to actually sit down and READ some of her early books, they'd have a different impression of her.

A Ravenwolf Qute That I Agree With Oct 13th. at 6:18:03 pm EDT

What I found most striking about this article is the quote from Silver RavenWolf. As much as some love to hate her, see seems to be absolutly correct in this instance. Granted I havn't read enough of her work to know if this particular paragaph is representative or not.
