Women’s Art Show Goes On Despite Vandalism, Theft

Author: Jennifer Baldwin Source: Bakerfield Express (CA)

Title: WOMEN’S ART SHOW GOES ON DESPITE VANDALISM, THEFT
What started out as a joke – a way to get back at the discrimination and conservatism women artists felt they were experiencing in Bakersfield – has now grown so much that the annual Burn The Witch all-female group art show had to find a new venue this year.
But even that came with a price. Nearly two weeks ago, after the women had hung the first submitted art pieces on the wall to get ready for this Saturday’s event, curator Nyoka Jameson was horrified to find some of the artwork missing and vandalized.
Apparently, the two bingo groups that share the space at Westchester Hall didn’t like what they were seeing, Jameson said.
After she hung some of the initial art, the Tuesday night bingo group complained, she said. So Jameson took sheets of plastic to the hall at 2801 F St. the next day and covered up the pieces she thought would be most offensive. Apparently that wasn’t enough, she said.
On Saturday, when Jameson returned to the hall, she was horrified when she entered the building.

this show is doing it's job.
When in college I took a trip and went through an art exhibit at another college. Several of the pieces, to say the least, shocked the hex outta me. When I told her this she looked at me and said, "Good, they did their job."
I looked at her and she said, "Art is supposed to create an atmosphere of awareness and dialogue."
I had never thought of it that way.
To bad that to some it should have been removed and possibly destroyed because they were unable to talk about the themes represented.
As for the nudes? Pornography is in the eye of the beholder, as shown by a psych student attending the same college.
She showed me to pictures. One a rather "artsy" print of a young woman holding a tray. On the tray were some apples and her breasts interspersed between them Yes, she was naked.
The second one she showed be was an older gentleman, grizzled beard in his 60's maybe 70's holding a tray. Only this time, he being naked as well, the tray held bananas and displayed his penis as part of the banana arrangement. I of course broke out laughing.
Her point was made.

for the work that had to be put in to repair the damage and to regain what artwork was taken, but this isn't the first time that has ever happened. All that I can say is that the artwork revealed much more about the perpetrators than it would about those who merely viewed it. I would hope that something could be done to bring justice for those whose artwork was damaged or taken. I only wish I could see them. That one of the Tiger was especially intriguing to me.

I wonder if any details of how this building is operated (eg, legal "public accommodation"?) , or its relationship to the landlord or bingo group, could justify any hardball legal tactics to make the perpetrators learn a tough lesson about their apparent extortion and censorship based on bigotry tactics?
Can this speech content targeted vandalism qualify under state laws as hate crimes, and not just petty vandalism?
Are any parties or relationships involved that could justify a Federal court action, for an injunction or damages? If a pro bono public interest organization or law firm backed such a suit, just the legal defense costs could be pushed into the $25,000 to $100,000 range, and cause a little consciousness raising on the part of the perpetrators even if that litigation takes longer than the show's run and becomes no longer ripe. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 (42 USC 2000 et seq) or 42 USC 1983 could offer some tactical options, depending on details of the facility and its relationship to those with access or supervisory authority.
Is there any way to force the bingo group to pay for armed, uniformed and plain clothes, security with numbers of guards or off duty police adequate to fully supervise the bingo events and actions at the facility during bingo events and times the building may be accessible to vandals related to them? If that meant 12 armed guards during events, and 2 at other times, for a period of a few weeks, it would send a message to the vandals and their facilitators that they got a large bill for being petty crooks over protected criteria rights violations issues, and that their bingo atmosphere had a strong message based on high profile armed guards that they were seen as being infested with criminals, not community role models.

If our scout troop vandalized and stole items belonging to another group using the place we meet, we would LOSE the use of that building for being criminally irresponsible. And rightly so.
I wonder what the owner will do to the organization running the bingo game attended by vandals and thieves.
