Bewitched In Rhode Island: Ocean State Is Steeped In Supernatural Lore

You won't hear so much as a whisper of a witch-hunt in Rhode Island history.

No official record exists of malevolent Rhode Island women wreaking havoc on their communities. No courts called upon women to defend themselves against accusations of spell-casting or spectral visitations upon hapless neighbors. No woman here faced the noose on charges of consorting with the Devil.

Unlike neighboring Massachusetts and Connecticut, Rhode Island never executed a woman for the crime of witchcraft, notes Dr. Catherine DeCesare, history coordinator at the University of Rhode Island's Providence Campus.

"Not only did Rhode Island not execute women for crimes of witchcraft, it was never prosecuted in the Rhode Island courts," DeCesare said, "meaning, there are no witchcraft cases in Rhode Island."
