Italy, Vatican In Uproar Over Court Crucifix Ruling

Author: Philip Pullella Source: Reuters

Title: ITALY, VATICAN IN UPROAR OVER COURT CRUCIFIX RULING
The European Court of Human Rights ruled on Tuesday that crucifixes should be removed from Italian classrooms, prompting Vatican anger and sparking uproar in Italy, where such icons are embedded in the national psyche.
"The ruling of the European court was received in the Vatican with shock and sadness," said Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi, adding that it was "wrong and myopic" to try to exclude a symbol of charity from education.
The ruling by the court in Strasbourg, which Italy said it would appeal, said crucifixes on school walls -- a common sight that is part of every Italian's life -- could disturb children who were not Christians.

The USA and China may share the dubious honor of being gross international scofflaws for human rights issues. At least in this case, the European Economic Union has created a court and legal process to handle cases and enforcement of issues it faces, due to EU law equivalent to the US Constitution being enforced among member states. This case involves what in effect is the equivalent of a Federal Appellate court located in Atlanta, GA (11th Circuit) or Richmond, VA (4th Circuit) handling a case based in Florida or North Carolina.
If only the United Nations and their international courts of Human Rights or War Crimes could be as effective as this ECHR body. The USA and China both deserve many prosecutions, over far worse violations than these Italian schools.

The court isn't German, Strasborg is in Austria. Even if it was, people need to quit equating German with Nazi. The Federal Republic of Germany actually has many freedoms. And many minorities. It is actually Illegal to posses a Swastika, unless it is for religious purposes. And not just any religion, but Hinduism, Sikism, Buddhism, Falun Gong, etc. the cultures who had them originally.

think that its just a little creepy that a court in Germany is telling Italy what it can and cannot have in it's schools? Then again, many people probably have no problem as long as Christianity gets thrown under the bus.

Would they allow other depictions of torture and death to be hung in their schoolrooms? Probably not. Religious symbol or not, such a disturbing item shouldn't be around children.

The fact that this is even considered means that the church is losing some of its power in its own country. Even if they manage to foil the ruling this time, that won't be the end of it. I honestly believe that Europe would not suffer any lasting damage should the things be taken down. What they mean to say-is the church would, and it's about time they did.

And the xians certainly know all about religious persecution. After all, they themselves built their profane temples of necromancy on various Pagan holy sites.
The sooner every church, mosque, and synagogue become nothing more than crumbling façades, the better off the world would be. This ruling by the European Court is an important start.

What? Some people don't want an ancient execution device with a sculpted corpse hanging from it in a classroom with little children?
...And they say _we're_ the scary ones?
