They suddenly embrace creepy concepts such as ghosts, zombies, witches and anything else of a supernatural nature. It’s a tradition that resonates with the relegation of death to the realm of horror and fright. Now venture south of the border to Mexico. In the same spirit of tradition, many people fill their homes with images pertaining to death — but you won’t find any witches, goblins or creepy characters. Instead, they use this time of year to remember the dead and welcome their spirits back. Observed Nov. 1 and 2, the Dia de los Muertos celebration is about paying homage to deceased loved ones by way of homemade altars, small celebrations and gravesite visits.
