Halloran Wins Race, Queens Elects America's First Heathen

Author: Steven Thrasher (blog)   Source: Village Voice (NY)

Title: HALLORAN WINS RACE, QUEENS ELECTS AMERICA'S FIRST HEATHEN

Holy Tyr! Queens voters made American history tonight, when they chose Dan Halloran as the nation's first openly heathen elected official.

Halloran will serve as the City Council member from the 19th district, representing Bayside, Auburndale and part of Flushing. He and Kevin Kim were involved in a bruising campaign to the finish, which included many religious and racial fights and allegations.

Trips to both campaigns' offices on Election Night revealed how different the two were.

It's funny-- the area Dan represents is generally a socially conservative place. Northeast Queens is predominantly 1 family and 2 family homes with back yards and tree lined streets. it used to be mostly Irish, Italian, other assorted Europeans, and Jews. Over the last 30 years there's been an influx of Asians, at first Chinese, but now Koreans in the main. There are Korean Presbyterian and Calvinist and Baptist churches all over the place-- full of very socially conservative Asians, very traditional and very work ethic oriented. I know from conversation that some of them don't consider Catholicism to be Christian-- i suppose they look at it as thinly veiled paganism. It's an odd place to elect a neo-Pagan.

Anyway, Dan's election will bring some true diversity to the Council-- diversity of thought as opposed to skin color, facial features and other superficial attributes. There are plenty of council members who are happy to recite politically correct platitudes all day long-- sometimes I refer to this town as The People's Republic of New York City. We need some new views.

Good luck Dan.

Congratulations! Nov 5th. at 1:42:04 pm EST

Though I disagree with his political views, I am very proud of Halloran for becoming the first elected Heathen official in the United States.

Democrat or Republican, any Pagan public figure is further evidence that we are, in fact, normal people, not the bogeymen certain groups want to paint us as.

Now we just have to hope Halloran lives up to the high expectations that are generally placed on "firsts."

And I am glad to see a Republican Pagan/Heathen making office! In New York no less! That just makes my heart soar... Knock 'em dead Dan!

That liberals can't debate anything without resorting to name calling and appeals to emotional verbage?

Just A Neocon Of Another Stripe... Nov 5th. at 10:23:14 am EST

As both a Wiccan Pagan and a Liberal, I am very glad to see someone that is not from the ruling monotheist religion - and a member of a religious minority - win a political race.
However, I, unlike many Monotheists out there, am not blinded by the religion of the candidate to the point of ignoring their politics.
The extreme right and the Teabaggers have shown themselves time and time again to prefer lies over truth, taking their rhetoric from idiots like Glenn Beck, the jackboot unlra-neocon whose complete disregard for any shred of the truth is only rivalled by his own grandiose sense of self-aggrandizement. Much like their former darling, the pill popping Rush Limbaugh.
So, as glad as I am that the choice of candidate breaks with the traditional church-club mentality, I view this election as a disturbing break away from the call for true change and a better future for America, and a flirtation with the tired-out lies of the Big Corporation Elitist Ultra-Rich puppet: the neoconservative movement.

Happy to see a open Pagan/heathen win an election!

I'm part of Danny's tribe and the reason he fought to keep his faith out of the campaign is because he firmly believes in the seperation of church and state.

This should be a national news issue, not a local rag read.

Cudos to you dude! Now do something with your time there, don't just pander to the corruptions of all political offices. It's better to not get re-elected because you were too busy getting it done than kissing butts for election money.

So now Queens has a King. :P

Halloran had better know enough to keep his religion and his job separate unlike a certain election-rigging chimpanzee from Texas by way of Maine failed to do.
