Confederate Flag Banned Again

Author: Elgin Jones   Source: South Florida Times

Title: CONFEDERATE FLAG BANNED AGAIN

Just days before the annual Veterans Day parade in Homestead, the Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) group announced on Wednesday that the Confederate battle flag has been banned from the event.

Political observers say the long-simmering feud over the Confederate flag issue contributed to the ouster of Mayor Lynda Bell and three council members from office in Tuesday's election.

Officials with the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) group, which is organizing the Nov. 11 parade, could not be reached for comment about the reported ban.

To some, the Confederate flag is a symbol of southern pride; to others, it is a reminder of slavery, lynching and racial mistreatment.

"State's Rights" Is Mostly Myth Nov 7th. at 9:45:29 pm EST

nasionnaich (Stanchfield, Minnesota) - Email Me

When a person, group of people or a State decide to rebel against the Federal Government of the United States of America, it is sedition. It might also be treason, depending on how the rebellion is carried out.

When the "South" rebelled against the Federal Government -- against the "Union" -- those people said loud and clear that they no longer considered themselves legally obligated to obey Federal Law and the Constitution of the United States of America. Today, those who wave the symbol of the Confederacy -- the "South" which seceded from the "Union" -- are also saying loud and clear that they no longer consider themselves obligated to obey Federal Law and the Constitution of The United States of America.

As such, they are advocating sedition, at the very least, against the Lawful Government of the United States of America, perhaps even Treason.

The only portion of the Constitution which speaks directly of "State's Rights", apparently "granting" each State the "right" to pass whatever Laws it wants, is the 10th Amendment, which states "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people." The problem with the "State's Rights" argument is that the Constitution has never granted to the individual States any of the "rights" being claimed by those States.

It specifies "No State shall enter into any Treaty, Alliance, or Confederation; grant Letters of Marque and Reprisal; coin Money; emit Bills of Credit; make any Thing but gold and silver Coin a tender in Payment of Debts...No State shall, without consent of Congress, lay any Duty of Tonnage, keep Troops, or Ships of War in time of Peace, ENTER INTO ANY AGREEMENT OR COMPACT WITH ANOTHER STATE, or with a foreign Power, or engage in War, unless actually invaded, or in such imminent Danger as will not admit of delay." (Article 1, Section 10) . (emphasis - "all caps" - mine)

It is quite clear: By forming the Confederacy of the "Southern" (slave-holding) States, without the approval of Congress, the "South" actually did violate the Constitution and Federal Law. The Confederate flag is a symbol of Sedition -- and possibly Treason -- against the Federal Government of the United States of America AND The Constitution of the United States of America.

So much for the much-vaunted "The USA - Love-It-or-leave-It Patriotism" of those who brandish the Confederate flag.

If rebellion were "sedition," then Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Caesar Rodney, and the rest of the Founding Fathers would have been criminals.

As much as I loathe the buy-bull belt, I can't help but feel like shouting "go get'em!" to anyone sincerely waving the Stars and Bars (2nd edition) in the name of state rights.

Rebellion Is Sedition - Not "Patriotism" Nov 6th. at 11:58:55 pm EST

Actually, if the Government has a problem with a symbol it deems to be "subversive" and/or "seditious", it does have the right to ban that symbol from any and/or all Government-sponsored events. The Confederate flag just happens to fit the entire description: It is a symbol of Rebellion against the United States of America -- the "Union". It has NOTHING to do with showing oneself to be a "Patriotic American".

"It's our heritage..."

That's the rallying cry of many "Suth'ners" who claim that banning their Confederate flag will bring wrack and ruin to the good ol' USA. Well, some of my German ancestors likely were Nazis, so I suppose I can proudly fly the Nazi flag, claiming it is part of my heritage.

There shouldn't be any problems at all. Right? WRONG!! "Heritage", regarding both the Confederate and Nazi flags, is just an excuse to be offensive.

Nobody is trying to suppress the HISTORY of the Confederacy. But to glorify the Confederacy and what it stood for by displaying the symbol of it's rebellion against the "Union", all while declaring how Uber-Patriotic those who display that flag are to the USA? Now that is silly, rabbit.

p.s., If'n yer a-gonna be complainin' 'bout "Bleeding Heart Liberals", at least have the in-telly-jense to use proper spellin' an' punkchu-ashun. Otherwise, all yer a-doin' is perpechy-atin' the sterio-tipe of th' un-edjy-kated hill-billy Uh-Mer-i-can. As for being a "Bleeding Heart Liberal" -- I would much rather be one of those than not give a rat's arse about anything or anyone other than myself and my own pathetic wants.

Can't ban it from a public event if the government is putting on said event.

The war that was fought in which this Battle flagwas raised was about far more than slavery. In fact slavery was a minor issue. The Major issue was States Rights.

IMO This flag needs to be raised again. The "government" has intruded into the private lives of "the people" far to much.

it is once again time to take up arms, exercize our rights as free born citizens, and tell the politicians and bleeding hearts, THIS ISMY ***ING COUNTRY TO. if you dont like what i do, DONT ***ING LOOK

I have earned the right to live the lifestyle i choose. I am a VETERAN.
As are My Father, My Brother, My Sister, to many Nieces and Nephews
to count, and My Grand Father.

If The Bleeding Heart Liberals, and The Fundies dont like what i believe or the life style i choose *** THEM.

let them take up arms and defend what i and others believe.

VIVA LA REVILOUTION!!!!!!!

The swastika. You can forget what it used to mean, or might still mean in an entirely different context in other cultures. The Nazis own it, probably from here to eternity. It is outright banned in Germany, and there are severe restrictions in some countries on how the propaganda of the Third Reich can be presented. And for good reason, or so it seems . . . because . . .

. . . neo-Nazism continues to flourish throughout much of Eastern Europe and within Germany still, but most alarmingly, in RUSSIA!

Can you believe that? Hitler's bloodlust would have made slaves of every 'Slav' on the planet, and neo-Nazism is flourishing there?!! How can this be?!!

Well, if you relentlessly demonize a powerful personality, and try to eradicate its symbols and choke off open discussion, the 'sex appeal' grows. And it grows. And then it grows some more, where you least expect it, of course. And it will continue in just such a fashion for God knows how long and perhaps never stop.

And not too long ago, swastika graffiti started showing up in the STATE OF ISRAEL, and lo and behold, the gangs behind it, too. In country, if you can believe that.

This is why the Confederate flag, the full history of our nation, and the legitimate attitudes of the Confederacy should be discussed and debated OPENLY--not suppressed, not lampooned, not closed off from the theoretical ears of the 'innocent.'

The hard truths of this world must be faced head on in the clear light of day. Or . . .

. . . you will just put a sexy butt and tons of sleazy allure on immensely fertile patches where there were just the ideas of certain men before.

I may not like the buy-bull belt, but a state has the right to leave the Union if it so chooses. Whether you agree with it or not, this is a First Amendment issue.

I Get Angry Sometimes Nov 5th. at 9:08:58 pm EST

Marius Silverwolf (Christmas, Florida) - Email Me

Every time I see a Confederate Flag sticker with REBEL PRIDE on it, every time I see a jacket emblazoned with the Confederate Flag and the tagline True Blood Southerner, every time I see a Confederate Flag flying on private property all I remember is a group of people who were hoodwinked into thinking they were fighting for "State's Rights" when all they were doing was blindly following a bunch of people who didn't like the way the game was turning out so they tried to take the ball and go home.

But what bothers me even more than the sugarcoated bedtime story told by somebody's great-great-grandparents is the fact that nearly 150 years later people desperately try to cling to a failed attempt at rebellion by claiming "Southern Heritage". That "heritage" included traveling by horse, using latrines or outhouses, no running water, no residential electricity, no computers, no cell phones, no TV, no radio, and no professional sports.

The Swastika was perverted by Nazi Germany to represent intolerance and oppression. So too does the Confederate Flag. Accept it, leave it to history, and move on already. The twenty-first century is waiting.

I live in the 1st state to secceed the Union. Not proud of it nor the Bible belt. My ancestors were calvary officers and I'm not a member of any group supporting the flag. To me, it was an armed insurrection against the government and there should have been a death penalty for it's use. Lincoln nearly failed. The US would have been invaded by any other national power and taken over in it's weakened state. England would love to have had it back or at least divide it.

The Hypocrisy Comes At A Price, Does It Not Nov 5th. at 4:00:27 pm EST

R. Cicero (Seattle, Washington) - Email Me

If you noticed, this ridiculous suppression of a key symbol of a uniquely American event ended up costing the mayor and three council members their jobs. Their asses are out, and free to join the brains that were once attached, but obviously out to lunch. The only way, the ONLY WAY to guarantee that a symbol, any symbol, will live forever is to ban it, try and erase it, and make people forget about it. It merely hardens the opposition, and manufactures opposition where there was none before.

Have you not noticed that we have excellent trade relations with Communist Vietnam, the domino that never fell and never ruined the world?

Have you not noticed the VFW endorsing events in which former Imperial Japanese fighters rub shoulders with U.S. GI's?

Have you not noticed that despite incredibly bloody skirmishes with our northern and southern neighbors (in times past) over properties and loyalties, that we now get along pretty damn well with Mexico and Canada?

And by the way, I am no enemy of the perfectly good citizens of Iran. I see no good reason for another bogus, perfectly ILLEGAL sovereign violation, do you?

Meanwhile, you can NOT suppress the history of the Confederacy, try as you might. You can only embrace the reality of it, and try to deal with it.

Silly rabbits.

Unamerican - yes, unconstitutional - no. Quote for me the section in the constitution that says a state may not withdraw. While we are talking constitution - lets look at the means of electing a president.

First of all, the rectangular "Confederate Flag" was never flowen during the Civil War. The Battle Flag was square. Nonetheless, aside from being a symbol of racism, it is also a symbol of rebellion against the Untied States and its Constitution.

It May Be Heritage... Nov 5th. at 1:12:30 am EST

... but it's also anti-American.

It's more anti-American than an Iranian flag or whatever the taliban hang on their poles. The Confederate flag was, is, and always will be the symbol of a group who were fighting to tear this country apart. Had they won, there wouldn't be the Great USA All The Way. So I get a kick out of all those who use a more-patriotic-than-thou image and wave a flag that was to replace the American Flag.
