Obama Pledges New Relationship With Native Americans

Author: CNN   Source: CNN

Title: OBAMA PLEDGES NEW RELATIONSHIP WITH NATIVE AMERICANS

President Obama said Thursday that the federal government was guilty of mistreating Native Americans in the past and promised to forge a new relationship between the federal government and tribal leaders.

"You deserve to have a voice," Obama told representatives of 386 tribes at a White House Tribal Nations Conference. "You will not be forgotten as long as I'm in this White House."

Obama signed a memorandum directing federal agencies to submit recommendations within 90 days on how best to improve tribal participation in key government policy decisions.

Leaders of all 564 federally recognized tribes were invited to the daylong meeting.

If Truly Sincere, Apology Accepted Nov 7th. at 2:29:22 am EST

I'll believe it when it actually happens. There have been far too many such promises -- the vast majority of them blatantly ignored and broken. Granted, it is not just up to the President; Congress and the governments of the individual States must also follow through on this.

Only time will show whether this is just another case of empty words and political posturing.

I've got a suggestion.

Try listening to them. And not just to the political leaders, but to social and spiritual ones as well.

Even-- or maybe especially-- when you don't like what they have to say.

I'd like to see the land rights thing work out. Since, you know, if you want to get ethical about it, we should be paying them rent.

Other than that, it shouldn't be about how we can make them fit better in our system.

It should be about what we can learn to make changes in our system by listening to the echoes of one that may have been, all eutopian fantasy stories aside, better.

Perhaps it's better to wait and see what happens before anybody celebrates. At least, it's a start in the right direction.

I saw Obama speak to a number of tribal nations during his campaigning and was unsure of any follow-through. I really hope this continues in a positive direction. I'll be watching for further developments.

Pilamaya-yelo, Obama (and all supporters of the first Americans) .
