House Panel Passes Bill Restricting Patriot Act

Author: The Associated Press Source: First Amendment Center

Title: HOUSE PANEL PASSES BILL RESTRICTING PATRIOT ACT
Defying the Obama administration, the House Judiciary Committee voted yesterday to remove from the USA Patriot Act a tool for tracking non-U.S. citizens in anti-terrorism investigations.
The committee, dominated by Democratic liberals, also voted to amend the anti-terrorism law to curb the government's surveillance and records-seizure powers.
The bill went to the full House on a 16-10 vote along party lines, with Republicans casting all the votes in opposition. GOP lawmakers said the legislation would hinder law enforcement and intelligence agencies in fighting terrorism.
The legislation would allow the Patriot Act's never-used "lone wolf" section to expire at the end of the year. The provision permits the government to spy on non-Americans even when they're not linked to a recognized terrorist group.

According to the GOP, this was an important way to fight terrorism.
But apparently it was never used.
So how important could it be if no one ever needed to do it?

History shows that Adolf Hitler's government claimed the very same thing, regarding State Security in Nazi Germany. We all know that led to the SS and the Gestapo -- and what they meant for the people of Europe.
That's right, the SS and Gestapo had free rein to arrest, search and otherwise harass people "on suspicion". Not proof -- just "suspicion". Just like that provision in the "Patriot Act" which says non-Citizens (and certain Citizens, too) can be stopped, searched and arrested (and have their lives disrupted, homes searched, families detained, property confiscated, etc) just because they are SUSPECTED of being a terrorist.
Do we, here in the U.S.A., really want to become a 21st Century version of Nazi Germany? That's what we'll become if WE allow our Freedoms to be put on the proverbial back burner in exchange for the "security" of the Police State being pushed by those who advocate the so-called "Patriot Act".

Indeed, it is a fine line that has to be walked in order to protect the rights of citizens as well as provide a decent security without infringing too much on those rights. I can understand both sides of the argument, especially after 9-11. While I realize that we do need enforcement to keep the peace, we cannot totally sacrifice the rights of citizens to that effect. We shall have to see what the result will be after this wrangling is done. If the administration is wanting this, the question would be-why?

The House was defying the Administration?
Doesn't that mean the Administration wants this?
