Non-Christian Harassed At Purvis High

Author: Jasmine Wolfe   Source: Student Printz (Univ. of Southern Mississippi)

Title: NON-CHRISTIAN HARASSED AT PURVIS HIGH

When 17-year-old Shaun Derusha informed his mother that he would be unable to return to Purvis High School until she met with his principal, Denise DeSadier thought he was joking.

She had received neither letter nor phone call indicating any sort of misbehavior from her son. Such would have been the “proper” procedure for any institution purveying the attainment of education, but DeSadier agreed to have a conference with the involved administrators at her son’s school in hopes of reinstating her son’s place.

“It was believed that he planned on summoning demons to attack select students at the high school,” his mother told me.

DeSadier left the conference feeling her son had been severely wronged due to the fact that he and their family are practicing witches.

Disturbing Nov 13th. at 8:04:46 am EST

Gitana (Santa Fe, New Mexico) - Email Me

This is extremely disturbing, especially in light of the rapid rise, and very clear anti-pagan movement being whipped up by the fundies/xtians/Pope; and the global anti-witch movement (and murders./maimings happening in Africa) - fueled by the xtians, of course.

I am not sure many here have grasped the seriousness of what has transpired in that little town - particularily forcing the teen to take a psych exam, and not allowing the family to even review the accusations against them (Salem, anyone?) .

This is an ACLU matter, pronto. Can't happen here in the USA again? It just did. We all have a responsibility to fight against this.

How Sad... Nov 13th. at 1:50:23 am EST

Wiyan Wanagi (Fountain Valley, California) - Email Me

...it's hard enough being 17, this kid shouldn't have to be further ostracized by his peers - and now the school administrators. Sounds to me like "they" already "won" - a Psych test? To determine if he can come back to school? I'm not quite sure his parents even understand the implications of what they allowed their son to be subjected to. I hope they DO file a lawsuit, and I'm lighting a candle for this child.

Sorry To Post Twice. Nov 11th. at 6:55:03 pm EST

Aurora Callo (Olympia, Washington) - Email Me

I spoke to my education law professor about this, and she pointed me to Goss v Lopez and Tinker v Des Moines School District. The student is entitled to notification of his suspension and the reasons for it before it takes place. He's also entitled to a formal school hearing before the suspension takes place. Although the accusers can remain anonymous, he must be able to read their statements in their entirety (only their names blacked out) , and he must be given sufficient chance to respond and defend himself before the school board. All of this is guaranteed to US citizens under the due process clause of the Fourteenth Amendment--and I haven't even looked into the religious discrimination aspects yet. He should definitely sue; he's got a groudbreaking, bulletproof case.

A Psych Exam For Being Pagan? Nov 11th. at 11:24:28 am EST

Maeven (Los Angeles, California) - Email Me

How incredibly insulting! I really feel for this family. Ever since that stupid wanker in the UK went on about setting loose demons in a church, now are the fundies going there with their fears and accusations? Another poster below was right, they should have done the psych tests on the accusers. And a lie detection test while their at it.

Witch Hunts Like These Are Hate Crimes Nov 11th. at 8:49:21 am EST

karrie9 (Kenosha, Wisconsin) - Email Me - Web

That is the truth of it, essentially and it's about time the perpetrators of such Witch Hunts are held accountable, meaning that any schools involved should shoulder the brunt of the blame because they're supposed to be the educated, educating, and extremely responsible adults in the situation.

Now, I don't know if cases like this one would satisfy the legal criteria for a hate crime or crimes, but something has got to be done!

And legalism isn't sufficient anyway because obeying the law is the very minimum we should acheive, and do not provide the standards needed for a fuctional society.

6 Components Of A Witch Hunt Nov 11th. at 8:29:30 am EST

karrie9 (Kenosha, Wisconsin) - Email Me - Web

How to Brew a Witch Hunt or "6 Components of a Witch Hunt"

Hope this is **useful.**

1. Association/rumors become evidence/cause.
2. Secret and/or poorly examined accusations are accepted.
3. A perceived threat to "moral boundaries" becomes a vilifiable target individual/group and steps are taken to humiliate/degrade/shame/limit/punish and "clarify" role of target. (Adults may find they've lost their jobs, children may find they're suspended, and so on.)
4. Said vilifiable target individual/group is assumed to be guilty/dangerous without **proper** proof or investigation.
5. The extreme pressures the fear mongerers created conveniently give them excuse to take extreme measures such as but certainly not limited to:

* Conducting "spiritual" attacks, even death curses through “imprecatory psalms” and similar activities.
* Creating or using usually faith-based campaigns or projects to combat said vilifiable target.
* Placing the target in psych ward, locking down a school, attempting to set shop owners on fire ( reference to the attack on Crystal Basler Payne, owner of The Country Goddess, Il)

6. Hysteria/Hype/Memes/Rumors (anything vicious and viral) add to the witch hunt phenomena.

Evidently, I like my lists of components or steps to various phenomenon, so when I looked for a succinct one regarding witch hunts and couldn't find it, I looked at various witch hunt scenarious created a list of common witch hunt components.

I was first inspired to do something like this in reaction to "Rumored Big War Causes School Lock Down" that I ran into on The Wild Hunt Blog. [Web LINK]

That also should not have happend in an educated nation.

Something Rotten There Is In Purvis... Nov 11th. at 1:30:12 am EST

DeSadier should hire a lawyer and get those "complaints" by way of subpoena. "Protect the identity of the students", my Aunt Fanny.

Wish They Would File Suit Nov 11th. at 12:09:20 am EST

Hadriana (Rome, Georgia) - Email Me

I wish they would file suit because there are a lot of YOUNGER pagan children coming up that might have to endure the same thing.

I homeschool -f ear of this sort of thing is one reason why. My son's paganism just drips out, and we are in a very Christian conservative Southern BLOOD RED town.

Prosecution Is One Option Nov 10th. at 11:11:50 pm EST

Ahr-Ohn (Bridgeport, Connecticut) - Email Me

May have to take this sort of thing seriously, in third world areas like the Niger Delta. I don't seem to have the traveling funds, to go down for the Exorcise, but it sounds like Daemonic Attack is just what their WitchDoctor ordered.

If he's qualified to serve as a teacher, he's likely over educated, for that area, and still an ignoramous. It would put the Fear of God into that town, if it's preachers merely felt a Christian Presence. Most of those Neopags are literate, after all, and don't have to take what the Bible is supposed to say on Faith.

Let's have a looksie as to what's oughtness... Queen of Swords got herself noticed in Shuffling... Drawn is The Tower Invart: Continued oppression; Following old ways; Inability to affect any worthwhile change; entrapment in an unhappy situation. I don't know why those energies would be left lying about, if that Principal has volunteered his little town...

Oh, I googled VTech, and it seems to be in the back yard of Christianville.

Wrong Subject Of Psych Exam Nov 10th. at 9:31:17 pm EST

Terry (Irvington, Virginia) - Email Me

Scared of demon possession as if life threatening?

It sounds as if the three complaining students need some psych treatment, and their parents and their churches investigated for child abuse for likely causing that pathology.

School admins used a guard and threat of violence against the victim in this case, after believing that kind of faux-xtian psychotic delusion? Lock them up for deprivation of rights under color of law, assault (threat of imminent illegal use of force, battery not required) , and whatever else fits, and go for civil commitment orders that include no contact with minors.

Maybe a Federal suit is needed here, as consciousness raising for faux-xtians sometimes takes the form of a tax rate increase to pay ACLU affiliated counsel and wronged individuals. That's where the idea of a non-monetary injunction or consent decree is misguided, as "money damages" is a mantra that often means more in the local fishwrapper and the hushed whispers in the rabid fundie hate cult indoctrination camps around town.

Just Another Day In Paradise..... Nov 10th. at 9:00:30 pm EST

bigcat (peoria, Illinois) - Email Me

Sounds very xtian to me. Apparently, some of the students complained about him being "different" and the administrators merely assumed he was going to threaten them. Of course, there is no real reasoning with them......

....laughs.... Nov 10th. at 8:39:40 pm EST

Zodiac (Waverly, Nebraska) - Email Me

Thought the kid would summon demons? That is really lame.

....tempted to make a joke about the demons wouldn't have room in the thick, empty heads....

This Takes It - Again Nov 10th. at 8:28:23 pm EST

Aidan Odinson (Collingdale, Pennsylvania) - Email Me - Web

Of course, as one pointed out, we're talking about discrimination in a small town. And I've been in places where it was not even necessary to actually be one of "those kind of people" to feel the hatred.

Nevertheless, the school, as well as the school officials, deserve to be prosecuted.

... Nov 10th. at 7:41:25 pm EST

Draken (Bronx, New York) - Email Me - Web

Yet another case of "xian love." And before the "playgan" trolls start complaining, this is the norm and not the exception. Simply look up the facts and you'll see I'm right.

Oh Lovely Nov 10th. at 7:00:58 pm EST

Panthea Ge (T-Town, Michigan) - Email Me

I had to keep reminding myself that this was written by a student. Her comments make it hard to tell whether she is angry at or biased against the boy. I'm leaning towards moral outrage in his defence.

It seems like the family is being overly passive about the whole thing, but hey, if they can live with it, more power to 'em. Discrimination in a small town is par for the course, after all.
