Non-Christians Focus On Secular Side Of Christmas

Author: Nick Hytrek Source: Sioux City Journal (IA)

Title: NON-CHRISTIANS FOCUS ON SECULAR SIDE OF CHRISTMAS
Many of us have undoubtedly heard someone urging folks to tone down the commercialism of the holiday season and "keep Christ in Christmas."
But what if you're not among those who follow Jesus Christ? What if you believe in another god or no god at all?
For non-Christians, Christmas isn't about the birth of a Savior. It can mean many things, but it's not a time for heading to Christmas Eve church services or putting a nativity set in the yard.
But that doesn't mean it isn't a special time of year.
Many non-Christians still observe the holiday, but choose to focus on secular traditions and family.

I don't see why it is a problem. Christians can keep their Christmas just the way they want to. If you know the true meaning then that should be it. The gifts are not a part of the actual holiday any more than chocolate eggs are a part of the Christian Easter. This is mostly commercialism that puts a lot of these misconceptions in the holidays.
I know that I personally become a bit of a bah humbugh during the holiday season. We don't even recognize Thanksgiving anymore, which, to me, is more important than Christmas. I don't see why it's been set to be such extremes with everything. I also don't see why we should get so defensive unless we are being personally attacked. I don't mean to back down, always stand up for what you believe in, no matter what. But don't go on the offensive immediately.

| Keeping Yule In One's Own Way..... | Nov 11th. at 10:39:44 am EST

Yule is my time too. I prefer it to christmas because I can get the holiday over with a little sooner. I wish that christmas was a little more like Thanksgiving. More food than gift. I would sooner have a friend bring over a hot bean casserole than a present. After all, the presence of friends during the holiday is a greater gift to me than anything in the store that I could at any other time, buy for myself. Let the xtians worship as they will, and revel frenetically at their altars. The holiday is not theirs alone-and never was. christmas has his name in it only because they put it there by political approbation, to supplant other Sun Gods said to be born at this time, not because- he- was born at this time since history clearly shows he was not- and never was- a true Sun Child. The real reason for the season has been the Solstice and the fact that the earth is again turning slowly toward Summer, the hopes for good crops, and brighter longer days. This season belongs to all-one way or another, and is merely another turn of the Wheel bringing back the Sun.

| The Answer, My Friends.... | Nov 11th. at 1:46:19 am EST

The answer, my friends, is blowin' in the education.
I was at one of the local thrift shops, looking at the second- and third-hand stuff I can't afford to buy, and one of the volunteers/employees was trying to set up a "new" Christmas display (the kind that sits near/under a tree...) . I walked up to him and said "Geez, Halloween is just done, Thanksgiving isn't for another month -- and you're setting up that...thing."
He looked at me and says something like "Yeah, next thing we know, we'll have to set this junk up in September."
That's when I laid it on him hard. I told him "Y'know, Jesus wasn't even born in December. He was born in spring -- y'know, the LAMBING SEASON." (I didn't holler at him though, I just emphasized the last two words as I said them) That's when I casually mentioned that maybe, just maybe, the churches all got it wrong.....
He wasn't the only who heard it, either. I wasn't trying to be deliberately loud, in fact I was being quiet, but since it was quiet in the shop it was very easy for people two aisles over to hear what I said.
"Keep Christ in Christmas"? I go out of my -- when appropriate -- to educate the local Christians as to just when their Jesus was actually born. And I always make sure to point out the fact that in the Northern Hemispere (where Israel, Egypt, Jordan, and all those other Middle Eastern countries happen to be located) lambs are NOT born in December.
Christ was NEVER a part of Christmas. Not until the "Church" put him there, anyway.

.... and out of Yule.
Yeah, that about sums everything us right there. The christians can go ahead and keep their jesus in christmas all they want. We already have everything else. After all, Yule is the true reason for the season.

"Others" is a far better word since I don't identify myself in the negative and I doubt few do.
We do Yule. On Dec. 21st. We send out Season's Greetings cards. Even the Christmas cards that aren't overtly religious don't seem very secular in a family with so many different religions/paths.
Not big on gifts for the holiday. It is a celebration of lights, feast and family.
