ACLU: Bibles Passed Out, Prayer Encouraged In Cheatham County Schools

Author: Kate Howard Source: The Tennessean

Title: ACLU: BIBLES PASSED OUT, PRAYER ENCOURAGED IN CHEATHAM COUNTY SCHOOLS
A lawsuit has been filed against the Cheatham County School Board alleging that school officials have promoted their own religious beliefs and allowed and encouraged public prayers at school events.
Civil rights attorney George Barrett and the Tennessee chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union filed the suit in federal court today on behalf of four students, listed under aliases. Two were students who graduated last year from Sycamore High School, one is a current student at Sycamore High School and another attends Cheatham Middle School.
The suit seeks an injunction against the schools to prevent them from continuing the activities mentioned in the suit, and nominal damages for the two students who have graduated.

Would the faculty REALLY fight equally for Pagan groups operating within the school? Would they be willing to stick out their necks within their own community to fight for non-Christians? I don't know about Cheatham, but in lots of small communities such would be a social no-no.

Some wily kids should, you know, secretly film what's actually going on in a way that identifies the school and offending staff and post it on the Net.
There's more than two sides to any "culture" war!
School should not be such a war zone.
We know very well that it's not equal opportunity religion. I hate deception.
I thought they were supposed to deter deception, not celebrate it like power hungry hounds from hell.
Enough of the Christian Nation (as in theocracy, crypto, de facto, or other) lies.

| If What The School Administrators Say Is True.... | Nov 17th. at 8:33:00 pm EST

If what the school administrators claim is actually true, then there will be no problem if some Wiccan students want to form a group at the school. And maybe a Druid grove and an Asatru kindred to boot! And the school administrators will fight just as hard for the Wiccans', Druids', and Asatrus' rights as they will for the Christians.
And if that can't happen, then they're going to have to get the Christians to back off, too!

all one has to do is substitute "nazi" in their tactics and you have pretty much what they are doing.

Where the hell are the kids with the Norwegian death metal CDs? This seems like a perfect place for them to do some IRL trolling, especially on Sundays.

...the same kind of situation that I went through fighting for my son with the Wylie High School in Texas. Only there were "bible fights" with bibles being thrown at the non-christian students, teachers being prosthelytized against, prayer circles blocking the hallways, etc.
I contacted the ACLU and got no response. I then contacted the school and was met the same hostility and ignorance that is reflected on the posts of the articles website.
These people just don't get it.

These are largely (in my opinion, anyway) the same sort of folks who like to wave the Confederate flag, claiming that "The South Will Rise Again", and they also happen to be some of the most virulently "pro-America" whack-jobs around.
Yeah, they're so "pro-America", they'll do anything to further their idea of what "America" should be -- and it's usually White, Christian (but not just any Christian, it has to be the "correct" Christian) , Conservative and anti-"Socialist" (meaning they're willing to help others out of the goodness of their hearts, as long as they get paid for that help. Tanstaafl, y'all) .
The school board's lawyers claim that "there is no policy of religious behavior being tolerated or persecuted." I take that to mean there is no Official Policy concerning the proselytization of any one particular religious view, whether by students, teachers or administrators.
Looks to me like somebody is grasping at straws, trying to save their mealy-mouthed weasel butt. I hope the Cheatham County School Board gets its collective butt kicked.

If only.... immature faux-xtian types were required to grow up and learn to deal with the realities of diverse society, and civil and human rights legal boundaries, before hatching kids or trying to abuse them with monocultist dogma.....
Oh, well, time for more low hanging fruit to be picked. If only the targets were harder to find, and didn't overload public interest legal organizations and court calendars.
A shift from token fines and legal costs, to fines adequate to raise taxes and hold voters responsible more visibly, might help discourage scofflaw schools from risking illegal actions to violate student rights. 10% of gross revenues for the year for malicious and intentional illegal acts is a rule of thumb to penalize businesses, that might well be applied to schools like this, and their malicious managers and employees personally as well.
These school officials apparently didn't even try the devious circumvention games others have done, placing Gideons and their ilk outside classrooms and school buildings, but with before or after hours access to kids entering or leaving buses. This should be a slam-dunk.
