Christianity's Early Days Debated By Scientists

Author: Dan Vergano Source: USA Today

Title: CHRISTIANITY'S EARLY DAYS DEBATED BY SCIENTISTS
Da Vinci Code fans may thrill to dark conspiracies surrounding the secret history of early Christianity, but how many know about the real scholarly debate surrounding the young church? Even without a sleuthing Harvard "symboligist" involved, scholars have found plenty of intrigue in how early Christianity grew.
"How did the Mediterranean world become predominantly Christian?" asks historian Adam Schor of Long Island University, in Brookville, N.Y., in the current Journal of Religious History. "Generations of scholars have approached it, but each new theoretical angle seems to reopen basic questions."

Why is there a preponderance of articles being submitted lately concerning xtianity? History is great, it's good to know how a faith develops. But how about equal time to the polytheistic faiths which were extant at the same time as early xtianity? And there were other polytheistic people besides the Egyptians. What about the ancient Chinese,Japanese, or the religious history of the pre xtian Lithuanians, and Slavic peoples? How about the Sammi? Let's hear about research projects concerning those.
Yup, there are some nice xtian people in this world. Ok. So what. That's not in dispute. But what I find is too much focus on xtianity in the world, and not enough on pagan faiths.
What's the matter, aren't WE doing anything of interest? Or isn't there enough press given to it unless it's the same old Wicca 101 articles which are peremptorily trotted out every Samhain, explaining that "No, we don't worship the Devil" ?
So I'd say more articles concerning paganism, and less concerning xtianity on Witchvox. The xtians get way too much press as it is.

And an interesting look at how new religions, in general, grow.
For better or worse, Christianity had a profound effect on the development of Western civilization. Without an educated clergy to see Europe through the Dark Ages, we might not be able to read ancient Latin texts and inscriptions. On the other hand, we might not have had the Inquisition either.
I would like to remind some of you who may have forgotten that not all members of a religion are the same. There are wonderful, caring Christians who actually try to follow the teachings of Jesus, and there are hateful maniacs who'd like to see us all destroyed. Lumping them all together as enemies does us absolutely no good. Remember--if we want to be accepted by mainstream society, we need to avoid pissing off the relatively decent majority of Christians. They are the majority religion in the US and much of Europe, and we have to live alongside them whether we like it or not.

Is NOT the characteristic of ONE religion. It is a characteristic or the narrow-minded who have nothing better to to but blame someone else.

Is it possible to be a Pagan without being a Christian-hater? I don't think so especially after hearing from my fellow Pagan brothers and sisters these days. Now granted, I used to be one, but I feel I have grown up since then. Christians can be annoying, cruel and stupid. So can Pagans and I have participated in many a disfuncional Circle to attest to that. Christians can also be kind, like my neigbor who cooked for me while I was on bed-rest or another friend that took my kids in the middle of the night so I could take my husband to the emergency room. They are not all jerks. Plain and simple. We need to defend ourselves from the zealots, but remain open to the balanced folk. It's a tough walk, but we are supposed to be taking the moral high road right? Oh I'm sure I will get flamed for this. Oh well flame on bright stars.

That would be the type of relationship the worshipers had with the Gods they worshiped. The social structure had many layers from slave, peasant, sert, merchant, aristocrat, military, nobility and ruling class to Emporer, Pharoh, etc. It was understood that each had their "place" and that was by the will of the Gods.
There was a lot of "appeasement" in Pagan worship. I'll do this for this particular God if He/She will do this for me.
Immagine being amoung the lower classes, and having a Xtian Priest tell you that in the eyes of his God you were equal to the nobility, the rich and powerful. And all you had to do was obey the Xtian Priest, convert to his religion and forsake all others, and then you'd go to heaven and be equal to all others, even the Kings and Queens. The early Xtian Priests used the Pagans own belief in reincarnation to sell this idea... reward in the after life, not the current one.
Powerful stuff, especially knowing how the Xtian's will tell any lie in order to convert someone, make any and all promises. It needs to be remembered, that Christianity was a "political" tool, used to control an increasingly uncontrolable populous.
I can immagine it would have been hard to resist, given how pervasive and persistant the Xtian's are. They're like bubblegum on hot assphalt, it sticks, and won't let go.

The xians are members of a death-cult that converted by the sword and stole the land and wealth of anyone who got in their way. How do you think the Vatican is so filthy rich?
