Fort Hood Soldier Says Army, Islam Share Common Values

Author: Gretel C. Kovach   Source: The Dallas Morning News (TX)

Title: FORT HOOD SOLDIER SAYS ARMY, ISLAM SHARE COMMON VALUES

Sgt. Fahad Kamal awoke before dawn the morning after the attack. In his Army uniform, he stood before his prayer mat, the one his mother bought him in Houston. He smoothed the top right corner folded over against the evil eye, touched his forehead to the velvet rug the color of sand, and held his palms toward heaven.

Kamal, 26, a combat medic who served in Afghanistan before moving to Fort Hood, had a lot to pray about that day. Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, another soldier – and another Muslim and medical professional – was accused of shooting 13 people dead and injuring 29 more.

A U.S. citizen of Pakistani descent, Kamal feared those bullets could ricochet beyond the cordoned-off soldier processing center, wounding even more. So he prayed for the victims and for the Army, for his family in Sugar Land and other Muslims. He prayed that their faith would not be judged because of one crazed extremist.

No One Here Saw This Coming Nov 25th. at 11:10:01 pm EST

Fort Hood Open Circle DFGL (Fort Hood, Texas) - Email Me - Web

I'm the distinctive faith group leader for the Open Circle on Ft. Hood. On Nov. 6 I comforted a Sargent who is a chaplains' assistant and, as far as I know, not pagan.
All this gentleman could say was "How could I know someone that well and not have seen this coming?"
Yes, the shootings are a horrendous event that all of us, especially here on Hood, will have to live with from the moment that Nidal (in my opinion, he does not deserve to be addressed by rank that only a patriot should be address by) squeezed off the first shot until we draw our last breaths of this lifetime.
But, simply because we are wounded, that is not a reason to begin divisive dialogue or start in with "picking" on any specific religion. We, here in Texas, are in the "bible belt" and I believe that all faiths that are not fundamentalist need to, now more than ever really pursue interfaith dialogue. I do not see this as a musilm problem but the basic problem of any religion that has moved to the right and become fundamentalist. And FHOC (Fort Hood Open Circle) has had it's fair share of "trouble" with fundamentalists. I am sending out energies to those who strive for peace, be it on the other side of the globe or in our back yards. After putting so many young soldiers on planes and not having them get off the plane a year later...peace is the only answer.
I am not trying to be "fluffy" I just want the wider community to understand that, as an army wife, as a lay leader in central TX pagan community and as a friend to so many that I will not see again this lifetime, I am tired of the battles and I am weary of wars, be they here or else where.
Do I believe we should all go back to the broom closet? absolutely not! But I do believe that we should reach out and build stronger bridges with all faith communities because if, as a country, we are divided by our freedom of religion, that freedom will cease to exist. I've lost too many that fought to defend that right to watch it go away because of my own inaction.

No Easy Solutions.... Nov 24th. at 9:54:42 am EST

If extremists insist on leading the pack, naturally that is what others are going to see, and upon their actions render their judgments of the entire group.
Perhaps the only way this can be combatted is for those who are not extremists to come out in condemnation of the actions of their more vocal and violent brethren and to take a stand against them by being first to help those attacked by extremists and by corraling the extremists rather than have them terrorizing everyone.
It is not enough to say that "they don't speak for me." If one remains silent.

Wayyyy back I heard those demons at the 700 club addressing muslim and islamic martys. "Unlike christianity, their religion teaches that it's god's will to give your life to kill unbelievers." blah blah blah.

Check this out. I just read this in, of all things... a children's bible story book called "Hero's of the bible".

In their bible, Samson (a Hercules rip-off) was tricked by a woman into losing his strength and being captured by non-jews. They lock him up for a while and then hold a big feast in their temple. They put him out on display by tying him between two of the temple's pillars. He prays to god to give him his strength back and of coarse, he does. He rips the pillars down, crushing thousands of unbelievers and even himself.

The book actually specifies at the end "Even though he also died, he is a hero because he glorified god and slayed his enemies."

No matter how you slice it, this 100% supports suicide bombing, shootings, ect, ect, for Isriel and christianity. So much for "Our religion promotes the value of human life."

Sadly.... Nov 23rd. at 12:14:07 am EST

we will always judge a group by the vocal extremists. Be they Muslim, Christian, Pagan, Pro LIfe or Pro Choice.

It is a fact that no matter how many we know that are NOT like the "crazed fundamentalist" or the extremist, that group will always be judged by the extremist element.

Yes, to say that ALL of a certain group are like the one that is focused on is going to be a fact of life and the news media.

So what is the solution? Or is there a solution?

The Difference Is, We Are The Same Nov 22nd. at 11:50:43 pm EST

Double standard or not, there are many areas of similarity between Islam and "America". One of those similarities is how both Muslims and "Americans" choose their leaders -- and how we allow them to get away with what they do.

In "America" we elect our leaders, after they have done their level best to hoodwink and/or brainwash as many people as possible into believing specific lies, half-truths and deliberate distortions. In Islam, the Imams do their level best to hoodwink and/or brainwash as many people as possible into believing the lies, half-truths and deliberate distortions about the non-Islamic world those Imams spread to their own people.

Hey, here in "America" WE are the ones responsible for what WE believe. WE elect our leaders, WE decide what actions WE take in any given "National Crisis". And when WE stand by and allow our leaders to break the Law (because "it's for the good of the Nation" - after all, the President is the "Leader of the Free World", and the Prez can do whatever the hell he wants!) , WE are every bit as guilty as those leaders. That is, I think, part of the message from this particular U.S. Army Medic -- a man who just happens to be of the Islamic faith.

Unless, of course, y'all really believe that a person's moral code is always dictated by the most vocal -- and extreme or "fundamentalist" -- leader (s) of their chosen religion. If that's the case, then I guess when a Pagan or Wiccan leader preaches hate and/or "religious cleansing", or some silly fluffy-bunny thing, they happen to be speaking for ALL Pagans and/or Wiccans......

And Here Comes The Damage Control... Nov 22nd. at 9:13:54 pm EST

Shouldn't judge Islam because of one extremist.

Okay.

And we're not supposed to judge them based on many, many extremists carrying out attacks on innocent people.

Okay.

And we're not supposed to judge Islam based on violent riots in places where Muslims are a minority.

Okay.

And we're not supposed to judge Islam based on extremist actions taken by Imams in places where Muslims run the show: things like whipping women who want to drive or go to school, beheading homosexuals and discriminating against other religions.

Okay.

But it is okay to judge Americans based on 13th century Crusaders, the actions of a few oil company CEOs and a couple of people in our state department.

Seems like there are a few double standards in the logic.
