Nativity Scene Proposed In Clarksville Draws Ire

Author: Jake Lowary Source: The Leaf-Chronicle

Title: NATIVITY SCENE PROPOSED IN CLARKSVILLE DRAWS IRE
The pastor at Grace Church of the Nazarene says he and his congregation will present their "Christmas on the Cumberland" Nativity scene despite objections from the American Civil Liberties Union.
Steve Estep, the church's pastor, said Saturday the church went through all the proper channels to present the display, and won't let the ACLU effort diminish their celebration of the season, and "what it's really all about."
The ACLU sent a letter to City Attorney Lance Baker on Nov. 11, alleging the city's riverfront Christmas observance violated the First Amendment in an "apparent promotion and endorsement of Christianity."
The letter, signed by ACLU Staff Attorney Tricia Herzfeld, claims the city showed Grace Church favoritism by allowing it to set up the display, which was "jointly sponsored" by the city and Grace Church.

Are prejudicial comments allowed? Free speech is one thing, to allow a supposedly friendly forum to turn into a hate slinging mindlessly self-righteous play ground is quite another I think. Even though my religion is rarely slandered, I feel rather uncomfortable being here when small-minded people make hypocritical comments.

Either they have to let everyone put up a display, or no one. It's that simple.

If they want to put up a display that's obviously ripped off of the Horus story, they most certainly can...as long as they have no problems with a Jewish group putting up a menorah or a Pagan group putting up a pentacle and/or an ACTUAL Midwinter display.
Allow one, allow them all.

Is that many here would not complain if a city park were used for a "Pagan Pride Day" nor would you complain if a mayor or city council-person lit a menorah, visited a mosque, or a Buddhist temple. But if a display of faith on public property is Christian then the vitriol appears like bowel effluence.
A little town in Oregon a few years back had a huge holiday display. . .a Jewish menorah and Kwanza symbols were used along with a Christian Nativity scene. The ACLU only took offense with the Christian display and sued the city to take down the Nativity Scene.
Realize we all want religious freedom; to be how our hearts and minds lead us in our private spirituality. Sadly, most don't realize that religious freedom should apply to ALL, not just those who conform to your spiritual beliefs. This is true for Pagans as well as Christians.
Too bad Wren's Nest has become nothing more than a pulpit from which to bash any spiritual beliefs the posters don't agree with. In the past, when the email function worked, I've been attacked for being Gardnerian, even though I've never professed to believe in some of the old lies about being directly descended from some paleolithic religion. Just the simple fact I'm Gardnerian seemed to be enough to receive hate-filled emails, vitriolic diatribes, and personal attacks.
Fact is, there were many who would post on a daily basis in the past. Some of those people I became, well, online friends with and I've kept up with. They quit coming here because of the hatred that spewed forth from uneducated idiots. I'm ready to join them.
Hate all you want. I'd rather work through love and understanding. Even with Christians. (Though I will correct any Christian that misuses the Bible for religious and political reasons.)

They could have easily hidden the $200 they stole from the city to do this, or paid for it themselves, and then if they had not included anything as foolish as "a production of the City of Clarksville" on fliers they would be able to get away with it.
But no, getting something done without screaming and yelling about what a good christian you are does not appear to be the American way.

At issue seems to be the City's investment of U$200, for the Nativity Animals, rather than the right of a certain spiritual cosmology to be celebrated at a Spaggetti Dinner.
