Pilgrims Gone Wild: A Reality Check On The Early Settlers

Author: Catherine Guarnieri Source: Register Citizen (CT)

Title: PILGRIMS GONE WILD: A REALITY CHECK ON THE EARLY SETTLERS
We all have this idea in our heads that the first English settlers of New England, commonly known as the Pilgrims, or more correctly, Puritans, were stodgy, God-fearing, hard working farmers, laborers and clergy, who had nothing better to do with their spare time than burn witches, attend prayer meetings, and defend themselves against the pesky natives who wanted the invaders to just go back home.
No way these people could ever let loose and get in touch with their wild side right? Wrong.
While researching my own family history, I came across some of the personal diaries, and judicial records of the Plymouth colony, that survived the wear and tear of time. I expected the usual, “Woke up at crack of dawn and sowed corn in ye fields till dusk,” sort of entries in the diaries. And there was plenty of that. What was shocking though, was the occasional nugget such as this, taken from the Plymouth colony records; "Sarah Ensigne, for committing whordome agreuated with diuers cercomstances, was centansed by the Court to bee whipt att the carts taile." That’s right, Sarah was a dirty tramp!

the author Robert Heinlein said: "'Sin' lies only in hurting another person unnecessarily; all other 'sin' is INVENTED NONSENSE. [my emphasis]" The puritan experience serves to illustrate that human nature cannot be tamed, by religion, by philosophy or anything else. The instinct for survival and personal gratification will always win out. Both the 17th century and 21st century puritans were and are wasting everybody's time with their pusillanimous silliness!

Though they weren't Puritans. Puritans simply thought the Church of England was too "Catholic". Separatists, which the Pilgrims were (and which were honestly related to Puritans) , hated the fact that the only recognized religion in England was the C of E, and that any others were suppressed by the royal government. Many Separatists were imprisoned, and those found in the royal government were dismissed.
They traveled to the Netherlands, then back to Plymouth in England before coming over on the Mayflower, as only HALF the passenger manifest. Their original destination, Jamestown; where they'd be indentured. Luckily they were off course and ran out of beer. Lucky for them that is.
Oh well, most are happy to live with a grade school level knowledge of our history instead of learning a bit of truth.

P.S. Hilarious how the Separatists came over here for religious freedom, yet failed to practice it. Thank the gods for the Enlightenment.

I loved this article! It just goes to show that times may change but some things don't, people are only human and have always (and I suspect WILL always) act on human nature. Kind of makes me wonder what people will say about is in the future?

I found this story very interesting. Who knew that the pilgrims had an fun loving side? Everyone, I am sure, was under the impression that the puritans were prudish, ultra conservative prats. However, the author of this article has shown us that everyone has the proverbial "skeletons in the closet."

Everybody knows that Pagans are children of Mother Nature and fun loving.
No fun loving Pilgrim could be a ultra conservative Christian and fun loving.
Therefore, they had to be Pagans.
