Animal Shelter Has Own 'Black Friday' Special

Author: Mike Danahey   Source: Suburban Chicago News (IL)

Title: ANIMAL SHELTER HAS OWN 'BLACK FRIDAY' SPECIAL

For holiday shoppers, the Friday after Thanksgiving typically is a bargain-hunter's paradise. And this year, even Anderson Animal Shelter is getting in on the act.

On one hand, the promotion is a play on the day after Thanksgiving being commonly referred to as "Black Friday" because all those deals and specials are intended to bring retailers into the black ink on the ledger, as the sales results that day can mean they will make a profit for the year. On the other, the effort is intended to help the shelter find a home for a big portion of its orphaned felines.

"About 40 percent of the cats in our shelter are black," director of operations Michelle Groeper said. "This can be attributed to the fact that it's a dominant color and there are more black cats born. Also, many people feel they are plain to look at and choose other cats with more interesting markings. Black cats have wonderful personalities, just like other cats, and we hope people come in to meet our adoption candidates."

Wren Chirps In: If you can, please consider a black kitty adoption.

I only have 2 1/2 dogs and a cat but everybody sleeps together. My dog-and-a-half, Rosie, takes up the space of a full sized person (she's a big girl) . My tiny Betsy kicks and needs some room. Merlin, the cat, lays on the heads or legs of whoever is sleeping the soundest.

Betsy is a black and tan chihuahua. Maybe that counts as a black pet. They're all rescues or foundlings.

Since so many places won't adopt black animals at the end of October, I really like the idea of offsetting that with a day to feature the same animals positively. I live in a house with 5 cats and a dog. Half of them are black; all of them are rescues; all of them are amazingly loving and sweet and friendly in their individual ways. Color has nothing to do with the depth of their love for those who treat them with respect.

As I type this, Yoda, one of my two black cats, is in my lap. I think he wants me to speak up on this issue. ;)

Black cats are simply wonderful pets. I hope that people can look past the stereotypes and superstitions and give these beautiful felines loving homes.
