Church Movement Aims To Reclaim Christmas

Author: Jeff Strickler   Source: Star Tribune (MN)

Title: CHURCH MOVEMENT AIMS TO RECLAIM CHRISTMAS

William Doherty won't be among the throngs in the shopping malls Friday morning. He will be in church.

Doherty, a professor in the Family Social Science Department at the University of Minnesota, is part of a growing backlash against the commercialization of Christmas. Last year, he helped his church, Unity Church Unitarian in St. Paul, hold a worship service on what has become known as Black Friday, the official kickoff of the holiday gift-buying bonanza and biggest retail shopping day of the year.

The protest against Christmas consumption, organized by the Advent Conspiracy, has become an international phenomenon. The program, created by three pastors in 2006, is being presented this year in as many as 1,500 churches, including several in the Twin Cities.

you know, after a lot of nose in the air snobbery on my part about "Jesus was born in March/April" blah blah blah, my wife calmly told me, "you do realize that sheep can be bred twice a year, right?"

I felt rather sheepish (yes, pun intended) .

but-that's all it is.
I don't believe Black Friday will suffer anytime soon- nor will retailers want to as that is why the christmas season is almost year around in most stores these days. There's a lot of big business in the holiday trade and the major holidays score the most.
Many will come to the pews no doubt, but only after they have gone shopping.
As for the reclaimation of anything, Yule and the Winter Solstice has always had gifts in it. christmas was just a crass political usurpation of it.

"Christmas" Really Is All About The Gifts Nov 27th. at 9:16:56 pm EST

nasionnaich (Stanchfield, Minnesota) - Email Me

"We still believe in capitalism," said the Rev. Mark Kelm, rector of the Episcopal Church of St. John in the Wilderness. The adult forums at his White Bear Lake congregation are following the Advent Conspiracy program. "We're talking about giving gifts that matter."...........

That, after the Rev. Runney Patterson Sr. declared "Most of what we consider holiday gift-giving isn't giving at all, it's swapping. We're just trading gifts. True giving is when you find an individual or a family that is not able to give back to you."

Kind of defeats the entire philosophy of Capitalism, where the object is to ***always*** receive something of equal or (preferably) greater value in return.

What are they smoking? Although I have often asked the same question in the past, I cannot help but wonder what smoking something has to do with being willfully ignorant of Historical Truth. The Truth is that "Christmas" has never had anything to do with Jesus, the "Christ" of the Christian world. "Christmas" has always been Pagan.

"Christmas" has always involved giving gifts. Whether these Christians wish to admit or not.
