Christian Church, Native American Tribe Reconcile

Author: Verena Dobnik, The Associated Press   Source: Philly.com

Title: CHRISTIAN CHURCH, NATIVE AMERICAN TRIBE RECONCILE

Members of one of America's oldest Protestant churches officially apologized Friday , for the first time , for massacring and displacing Native Americans 400 years ago.

"We consumed your resources, dehumanized your people and disregarded your culture, along with your dreams, hopes and great love for this land," the Rev. Robert Chase told descendants from both sides. "With pain, we the Collegiate Church, remember our part in these events."

The minister spoke on Native American Heritage Day at a reconciliation ceremony of the Lenape tribe with the Collegiate Church, started in 1628 in then-New Amsterdam as the Reformed Dutch Church.

I see some posters are back with a vengeance. Judging the past with modern eyes; scoffing at the fact a Church apologized for past misdeeds.

Let's get a few things strait; look at the past and many cultures, if viewed through today's mores and taboos, would have quite a bit to apologize for, especially our pagan ancestors. Whole cities razed to the ground; entire peoples enslaved; destruction of cultures; suppression of Judaism and Christianity; etc ad nauseum. No culture is completely innocent.

As a student years ago I spent quite a few summers taking part in archeological excavations all over Texas and the Southwest. Remembering something I heard about how "Native Americans never had war" I was amazed at how many Pre-Columbian sites had graves filled with people killed in acts of violent war. This was confirmed through study of grave remains (bones) .

As I said, "No culture is completely innocent." And it's ridiculous to judge past societies by modern mores and taboos. The ancients had a different mindset than we humans of today.

(BTW, Hitler's Nazis killed approximately 20 million people; Stalin, and his successors, killed 62 million; Mao, and his successors, killed 76 million. Yet you are taught about Hitler, but not about Socialist/Communist atrocities???)

That's the humor of it. Show me any given imperial power, and I'll show you an aboriginal culture that was brutally suppressed if not exterminated wholesale. They put their sorrys in a sack, but kept the sack, then stole all your sacks after killing your family. So what does being sorry possibly mean? Secondly, these are ancestor tales. Of course we moderns are still very cruel and brutal in ways they never were. And vice versa. But sorry isn't some magnificent sponge that elegantly soaks up all the blood and misery. It's like offering cough drops after you're already dead. Other great apologies: 'I'm sorry I ***ed your best friend,' or, 'I'm sorry I set your dream home on fire.' Sure, all is forgiven! A more subtly nefarious apology is always,'I'm sorry if anyone took offense at what I said' . . .

Don't you think? I mean really, some 400 YEARS LATER . . . better late than never, right? At this rate, I suppose we'll be hearing Catholic apologies for pedophilia around 2510.

But now that overarching compassion is washing the streets (as opposed to blood) , I just wonder if modern New Yorkers would like to exchange a few skyscrapers and their luxury condos for some of those necklaces. I imagine not. And I thought we were making so much progress!

Surely we could just give away some of those Goldman Sachs executives. And Catholic priests. Take them, PLEASE!!!

It's a start, at least. Four Hundred years late...but it's a start. And I am not speaking of the insincere "apology" -- for this does not appear to me to be a true apology. I am speaking of the acknowledgment, by the leaders of the church and Community, of what was actually done and why it was done.

Without that acknowledgment, all apologies are merely words.
