Internet Censorship Plan Gets The Green Light

Author: Asher Moses Source: Sydney Morning Herald (AU)

Title: INTERNET CENSORSHIP PLAN GETS THE GREEN LIGHT
The Federal Government has announced it will proceed with controversial plans to censor the internet after Government-commissioned trials found filtering a blacklist of banned sites was accurate and would not slow down the internet.
But critics, including the online users' lobby group Electronic Frontiers Australia and the Greens communications spokesman Scott Ludlam, said the trial results were not surprising and the policy was still fundamentally flawed.
The Communications Minister, Stephen Conroy, said today he would introduce legislation just before next year's elections to force ISPs to block a blacklist of "refused classification" (RC) websites for all Australian internet users.

| Censorship Is Insidious Hate Speech | Dec 16th. at 2:38:01 pm EST

Most content based censorship of this type is not about protecting anyone, but rather a cowardly, insidious type of hate speech. It fails to protect against most phishing schemes, Botnet and other virus or trojan attacks, and real net problems, not to mention de facto denial of service consequences of massive SPAM problems. It's really about a form of cultural genocide to prop up select religious and equivalent values as if superior to others, in a form that misrepresents that intent, and from the shadows where details aren't open to inspection and critical review, denigrate people and ideas behind censored speech content to second class citizen status.
Who can count the lies behind political claims of effectiveness in censoring target content?
It's common to hide child porn (however defined, such that one nation's adults are another's legal children) within depositories of mundane software support archives. It's common to use dynamic script generated fast expiring URL's to video and database content, to restrict "framing", co-branding, and links that don't require viewing the source site's advertising sidebars. Net filters cannot be designed to work as intended on such content, any issues of the larger content choices aside.
Then come issues where the same anonymous proxies and VPN's needed to be widely available for functional purposes of many international businesses and activists in countries known for secret police killing in the night necessarily also enable ready circumvention of any discriminatory content censorship practices. That leaves censorship of this type an intelligence test, if not a disruption to mainstream businesses and death threat towards some dissidents, including in China and its neighbors, or the mideast.
A proposal like this only bigot bullies and clueless halfwits could love.

are policies that will prevent governments from enacting policies that are supposedly meant to "save us from ourselves". The point is--soon, this ban will expand to encompass more than it was meant to, as no doubt someone in the near future will figure out a way to abuse it for their own benefit.

And the more net-savvy Aussies will just get behind seven proxies.

"Fairness" online.
It's not censorship - they're just going to take legal action against you if we don't like what you're saying. :)
