Reincarnation: The Cabinet Of Dr. Stevenson

Author: Michael Kaplan (blog)   Source: Psychology Today

Title: REINCARNATION: THE CABINET OF DR. STEVENSON

Why, in their past lives, was everybody a princess or mighty warrior? Didn't anybody dig ditches in the ancient world? Who took out the garbage? Who fed the elephants? Despite these quibbles, reincarnation has many attractions as an idea: it offers us another spin of the wheel; it puts punishment or reward for our deeds into a more credible landscape than the flames or the clouds; it simplifies the question of where all this consciousness goes to or comes from. It's tidy and sensible, like recycling. And it makes each of us special - if only because we once ruled Egypt.

If you shy away from this seductive principle because it is unscientific, take heart: Professor Ian Stevenson, described by colleagues as "a methodical, careful, even cautious, investigator, whose personality is on the obsessive side," spent a lifetime documenting instances of "reincarnation-type cases."

The evidence he presents is this: over 2,500 cases, from cultures around the world, where small children would describe previous lives and deaths they had experienced that turned out to correspond in detail with those of real people whose stories the children could not have known.

A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Cauldron. Feb 11th. at 9:13:57 pm EST

Friday Scott (Middleton, Wisconsin) - Email Me

I suppose, like many would-be debunkers, the skeptics tend to focus on charlatans and publicity-hounds, as well as those who might tend to put grandiose narratives to what they may even actually have memories of.

I've often said, "If in another life, you had a flash of what you're seeing around you right now, how much could you really derive? And Gods help you if the TV is on. " :)

What tends to stick with people, particularly through and into childhood and adulthood is going to tend toward being or seeming the more dramatic.

For all the Cleopatras out there, well, how many women alive at the time might not have admired or emulated her, at least in their own minds? :)

Still, I always thought 'Janitors of Atlantis' would make a good band name. :)

I sometimes wonder if future generations will have an easier time verifying less-splashy lifetimes, if the Internet survives in such a form, and with all the data-trails we're all leaving.

Kind of gives a new meaning to vanity-search. :)

Hello, future me! :)

Perhaps... Feb 10th. at 11:50:40 am EST

If people would have a past life regression it would only be a truly awesome life. A mediocre life would be forgotten at the turn of the wheel.

I recently had a theory that our consciousness never ends. That we are always aware of the present. Sometime between lives our past drops off. Like a trail that evaporates at the turn of the wheel. But this moment will always remain.

I am certain many of us don't want this life to be the only one we have. I myself would like to experience the joys and hardships of a family, something I myself more than likely would go through this life without.

Regardless of whether reincarnation is real, live this life like its the last one you'll have. Live in good health, because that provides you with the capacity to experience a greater bliss. Be there for your community, because there is no greater riches outside your health than supportive friends and family. When you achieve those 2 things you will already be happy. Then all the toys and wealth you get will be a bonus. Never put toys before your health and community.

Reincarnation Is Most Likely Feb 10th. at 7:41:25 am EST

That is, of course, my opinion. You think what you like.

However, I take the Buddhist stance, or rather the Tibetan Buddhist stance. I don't think that you can know or should know your past lives unless they are revealed to for a specific reason, and in my case, by the Goddess. I think that it can seriously mess you up if you do force a past life memory upon yourself. So in short, I think that most people who say that they have had a past life regression actually haven't. (I'm not trying to be rude. It's just my world view) .

So, why do I believe in past lives? To me it just makes sense. All of Nature is cyclical. This is my one great lesson from Wicca. I have witnessed the changes of the seasons and the Sabbats while understanding their meanings. New life is born out of the darkness of death and nothing dies forever. Life returns. Witness Mid Winter to Imbolg. It's amazing. That's why I believe in reincarnation.

I Sure As Heck Wasn't A Princess! Feb 10th. at 12:22:05 am EST

Gentle Butterfly (Scott Depot, West Virginia) - Email Me

I think everyone wants to think they were someone important in a past life to some degree, especially if their current lives are entirely mundane and boring. I have only two 'memories' of past lives and neither of them were particularly glamorous. I can remember being a young girl walking down a dirt road bordered by a low stone fence on a beautiful day that was getting ready to become stormy. I can also remember being a man in colonial America being flogged for adultery. That's not a comfortable memory at all, especially since I got the notion that he/I was not at all guilty for what he had done and would probably do it again.

Not everyone has memories of ruling the world :)

Listen To Your Young Children Feb 9th. at 7:41:23 pm EST

Lady Wolfwind (Okeechobee, Florida) - Email Me

Through the years I had heard and read about children speaking of past lives and deaths. I've always been Pagan but at one time in my life, I didn't know what that meant and at others I was not comfortable discussing the subject with others, even those closest to me. It wasn't until I was older I began to really listen to what my young children were saying. My youngest son would tell people what his life was like when he lived in California. In this life, he's never even been to California. At other points he would tell how he fell from something and died. I can't verify any of this but it is notable. He was about 4 or 5 years old at the time. He is now 7 and has no recollection of even talking about such things. I was fascinated but didn't dare talk to him too much about it as I was still in the broom closet and was afraid my family would think I was crazy. Now, I am open, and for the most part accepted. I wish I had been more confident and talked to my son more about his memories before they were gone. What a missed opportunity!

Belief In Reincarnation Feb 9th. at 2:27:04 pm EST

Cornelius Anatole (Rockville, Maryland) - Email Me - Web

Nearly a quarter of all "Christians" in Europe believe in reincarnation.

The two European countries with the highest rate of belief in reincarnation (well over 40%!) are Iceland and Lithuania, which are the two most recently "Christianized" nations of Europe.

Belief in reincarnation is one of the clearest examples of the just how limited the process of Christianization has actually been, even in Europe where Christians have spent the last 17 centuries attempting to extirpate all other belief systems.

I Don't Recall Ever Ruling Egypt Feb 9th. at 1:49:38 pm EST

Ahr-Ohn (Bridgeport, Connecticut) - Email Me

I'd've had little people rule Egypt for me. It's likely Kaplan had a turn.

Digging Ditches and Stocking Shelves is a good thing to do, after embarrassing yourself as a King or Prophet. It's just easier to find your famous past lives in the history books.

"So far, the cabinet remains shut."

Well, let's give the kid a chance to be a kid, shall we?
