When I first became involved in Wicca...some thirty odd years ago...as a neophyte...I was told I needed to use "Theban script" to write my Book of Shadows. I tried like hell to memorize it...but couldn't.

I came in contact with a coven that used Paul Huson's book "Mastering Witchcraft"...and he mentions the "Theban script" too....

My first ritual tools used the "Theban script" instead of the Alexandrian/Garnerian symbols.....now after many years as an "eclectic" and "solitary" I look back at those times and laugh at myself.

For those of us who have been in the Craft a long time...and came into it rather "wide eyed" with "starry gazes" the "Theban script" has a lot of nastolgic memories....

I now use the "Theban script" on my Cup...and the Alexandrian/Gardnerian symbols on my Athame....I have my 'Name" written in my BOS in "Theban"...not because I think it's "magickal"....but to remind myself how far things have come for those of us who call themselves "Wiccan".."Witch"....three to four decades ago it was serious stuff.

Silly, But Not All That Silly Mar 10th. at 3:38:18 pm EST

A one-to-one cipher is a rather pathetic way of trying to keep anything "secret." I guess Theban does look kind of cool, in a 15-year-old-boy-trying-to-scare-the-sh*t-out-of-his-parents kind of way.

But it is a fact that Renaissance Occultists were pioneers in the modern art and science of Cryptography. And we're talking real cryptography here, not some decoder ring game for children.

I didn't get my Theban code ring in my start-up kit did you? The joke is upon those of us who's memory is getting a little fuzzy. I found that I can write all the secret little codes I want, but my life is so hectic I can't remember where I put my translation list! Nah! I am at the point that I will stand behind every word I write and I have nothing to hide. I figure that if someone wants to reads what I wrote, they will find a way.

That would be darn cool, if Theban were 'universal'. Wouldn't it be neat if all witches shared a secret language (although not SO secret, since you can find the translation key easily) ?

Unfortunately, if they do, no one's told me. I actually have a secret language of my own which I use for writing, when I don't want anyone to read over my shoulder or pry into my personal thoughts, but it's not 'Theban'.

Interesting Mar 9th. at 11:27:41 am EST

Emberdragon (Irwin, Pennsylvania) - Email Me

the question that arises in this type of development is, what is his full intent on using this writing? I know that I personally use Theban to keep my texts unreadable except to those who know it, but it is a very personal writing. This could be both good and bad in my eyes.
