Basic Food Sold Additive After Salmonella Found, FDA Says

Author: Jared A. Favole Source: Wall street Journal Online

Title: BASIC FOOD SOLD ADDITIVE AFTER SALMONELLA FOUND, FDA SAYS
Basic Flavors Inc., the Las Vegas company at the center of a recall of more than 100 food products, continued to make and distribute food ingredients for about a month after it learned the bacteria salmonella was present at its processing facility, according to a Food and Drug Administration report.
The FDA last week recommended companies recall products, from chips to soups, that contain a commonly used additive made by Basic Food Flavors that tested positive for salmonella. The additive is mixed into foods to give them a meaty flavor.

The bacteria, salmonella, was found in the food-production areas (and IN the processing equipment) of "Basic Food" -- and the CEOs (and whoever else is supposed to be in charge there) kept the production lines going for a month afterwards. Yeah, they really, really, really care about OUR health. NOT.
But there's more: "FDA officials inspected Basic Food's plant for about two weeks starting in mid-February and found the company didn't adequately clean equipment and store foods to protect against the growth of contaminants such as salmonella, according to the inspection report."
Most likely, it "costs too much" to do what they were supposed to do. Hey, gotta pay for the CEOs Lexus and multi-million dollar mansion somehow. But, not to worry -- nobody seems to have gotten sick from it....at least, not yet. Seems the CEOs and Wall Street honchos care far more about the Almighty Dollar than about anything else.
So, what's that tired argument the conservatives keep trotting out in favor of deregulation of food-processing/production companies (and auto/transportation, and all other companies where OUR safety is at issue) ? Oh, right..."They'll regulate themselves and follow prescribed procedures, or institute such procedures as needed to ensure the safety of their customers". Yeah, sure they will.
