Pagan: It may seem odd that the pagan world has a celebration during the traditional holiday season. But many modern Christmas traditions actually hail from pagan origins. Mistletoe, once credited as a fertility inducer, is now nothing more than a cheap excuse to get a kiss. Pagans commemorate Yule, the longest night of the year. Candles are lit on Dec. 21 to ensure that the sun's fire will not be extinguished during the night, and to establish continuity between the waning days of autumn and the waxing days of winter.
