Pastor's Olympic 'Bloodbath Vision' Spurs Debate

Author: Aftenposten Source: Aftenposten (Norway)

Title: PASTOR'S OLYMPIC 'VISION' SPURS DEBATE
An Oslo pastor from an evangelical Christian movement claims he had a vision in May that the upcoming Summer Olympics in Athens would result in a "bloodbath." The pastor's remarks have sparked criticism from other Christian leaders and even a local bishop.
The pastor, Jan-Aage Torp of the movement called "Oslochurch Apostolic Generation" (Oslokirken), claims he initially kept quiet about the vision he had that there would be a "bloodbath" at the Olympics. But then he changed his mind and called Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK) to share it.
Torp earlier called for "prayer warriors" to band together in an effort to get the Olympics cancelled, fearing the Greek mythology would have a "bad spiritual effect" on both spectators, TV audiences and the athletes themselves.

Some people have commented that they don't get what's different about these olympics compared to other olympics, all of which are rooted in ancient Greece
I believe what Torp is protesting is the fact that the mascots for these games are specifically based on, or at least inspired by Greek gods, Athena and Apollo. The shape they take is based on an ancient doll or idol found somewhere in Athens depicting one of the gods. Ergo, these "cute" (but I think somewhat ugly) mascots may, in the mind of a yahoo like Torp, inspire young and future olympians to turn to idol worship.
Interestingly, there was a notice on Witchvox yesterday calling for assistance and international support for a campaign to have the worship of the ancient gods legalized in Greece in time for the Olympics - as a gesture to show the world that Greece has religious freedom and respects its cultural history as more than just a tourist commodity. Currently, worshipping the Ancient gods in Greece carries a five-year prison sentence, and worshippers must meet in secret. A timely cause, I think...

I wonder how this guy feels about Asatru? I wonder how he feels about his country peddling its pre-christian "mythology" to increase their tourist draw?
My parents brought me back a very nice Thor's hammer wall-plaque thingy from Norway last year. Somebody in Torp's home country made a few bucks off of his country's spiritual histroy, where is Torp's outrage??

It's good to learn that the US doesn't have a monopoly on Christian religious nuts. These comments from Oslo could easily come from a TV preacher here in America.
As Philip K. Dick wrote in Confessions of a Crap Artist, "The whole world is full of nuts. It's enough to get you down."

According to the article he objects to the Olympics on thegrounds that they originated in a historical period before Christianity. He is trying to stop them due to his perception of immoral influences in the area; how does this fit in with his vision of a "bloodbath"? The original olympic games did not showcase blood sacrifices, so he must be talking about the current terrorism threats.
These are based on the ideological clashes of fundamentalist monotheistic leaders, not on their reactions to ancient polytheist cultures. The "approved" Christian visions may be quite fanciful, but if the intent is to prevent disaster then they contain details on what the danger is, how it comes about, and how to prevent it. These details seem to be missing from his vision and unrelated to his main issues.
He must be aware of the clear biblical instructions on how to handle a false prophet. And he is apparently counting on his brother pastors to be negligent in their "duty" to deal with him acording to his own rules.
How sad that he is not organizing his prayer warriors for peaceful international relations.

| What Is The Difference? | Aug 4th. at 11:24:45 am EDT |

by Nyhtshade (Northern Wisconsin) - wc_xemail

What is the difference between this year's Summer Olympics and those that have occured in the past? Other than the "new age of terroism, " there is nothing unusual. Every country that hosts an Olympic event has used it as a way to show the world about their culture and diversity. The Games are supposed to be about sportsmanship and a unity amoung nations, even tho "we" are competing against others. So, this year, Greece is getting to showcase it's culture, which, yes, is steeped in mythology and the Ancients. Is Mr. Torp trying to warn us against the dangers of these old stories, or is he having a "true" vision of some terrorist act?
"Torp earlier called for "prayer warriors" to band together in an effort to get the Olympics cancelled, fearing the Greek mythology would have a "bad spiritual effect" on both spectators, TV audiences and the athletes themselves." Greek mythology has permeated the Olympics since the very first Games. Maybe, Mr. Torp tried out for an event and wasn't picked for the team. Now he's holding a grudge or something - who knows.
Let the Games begin!

Hmmm.... interesting.... When the "good" Pastor has a vision its a message from God, but if it were one of us it would be the Devil's voice we'd be hearing.

"Torp earlier called for "prayer warriors" to band together in an effort to get the Olympics cancelled, ..."
At first, I thought, "Why doesn't he pray that the Olympics are kept safe, instead?" Then I read the rest of the sentence:
"...fearing the Greek mythology would have a "bad spiritual effect" on both spectators, TV audiences and the athletes themselves."
Ah. Now I get it; he's an idiot.

How bout thinking before he speaks? I mean really, did he even bother to think of the implications of his "vision"? He is going to look like a fool if nothing happens. Even worse some wacko out there may try something now. Does he really think "sharing" his vision is going to do anybody any good?
Shaking my head.
