 Italy Police Seek 'Satan Squad' Author: Mark Duff Source: BBC News Title: ITALY POLICE SEEK 'SATAN SQUAD' Italian police want to set up a special unit to tackle the growth of new religious sects, particularly a violent new breed of home-grown Satanists. The new police squad would include psychologists, as well as a priest who is an expert on the occult. It would co-ordinate - nationwide - investigations into potentially dangerous religious movements. But more than a million Italians belong to other minority religions, and some experts are worried that the new police squad could target members of them as well - even though, despite their perhaps strange beliefs, they are entirely harmless. Silverwing (Colorado Springs, Colorado) - Email Me It would seem to me that the particularly vicious nature of those involved would bring them to the attention of the authorities under the supposition that murder, torture, etc. are illegal, immoral, etc. I do not think that performing these seriously henious acts in the name of "religion" in any way justifies them. These people need to be taken out of the social structure so they cannot do furthur damage. By acting this way in the name of whatever religion they care to call it, they endanger the people who do not subscribe to the major religious groupings in that society by exposing anyone not mainstream to even more suspicion than they already feel. I do agree that the alienation of young people and the lack of attention and reasonable interaction with parents may be a key contributor to some very bad behavior. Parental neglect and an unwillingness or inability to interact with children is a definite contributor to some very antisocial behavior. If positive attention and respect is given, it is returned. If not, then you get what you get and it is often not any sort of happy ending for either parent or child. Finally, I would be curious to know just what this priest thinks he knows about the topic he is an "expert" in. Too often, we have "experts" who are way off base. I am not saying he is but, when the Vatican's head exorcist claims that Harry Potter is satanic, I really feel the need to ask what this expert thinks. |

bigcat (peoria, Illinois) - Email Me I agree that they need to rein in the violence, but couldn't they come up with some other name? This is how pogroms get started,if such a thing gets out of hand and people start targeting others because they can't determine satanists from others. |

Nalaya (Chandler, Arizona) - Email Me - Web I hope that the officials mean craft related priests. . . seeing as how Italy has a large Strega/ pagan population there should be no issue finding experts. I hope to Gaia that they mean someone who has actual knowledge and not concerned with hunting blasphemy in the name of God. Because if they are not very careful, this could be very slippery slope. Maybe this team that the force wishes to assemble should have more than one occult expert on the outside of police enforcement that includes a variety of denominations. This sounds like a good job to outsource. This should not be allowed to become about religion, this is very clearly about violent criminals who are hiding behind a misunderstood set of beliefs that have been twisted to their disaffection to satify their ill temperment. Even Satanists should be appalled by this. From what I understand of Satanism, their tenents do not promote this type of violence either. We should all be very weary of police enforcement using this as a means to hunt down witches, or any other religion for that matter, simply because they are witches. We all have a stake in what happens in Italy and we should continue to keep a close eye on this at home as well as abroad. We should also make it VERY clear that the Pagan community at large regardless of sect does not promote or condone violence. |

"They indulge in a lethal blend of black magic, hard drugs, sex and heavy metal." Jeez, that sounds like a lot of band parties from the 70's and early 80's These people need to either get a life and let others worship as they wish...or team up with Stan Lee...I dunno. Shadow Dragon (nashville, Tennessee) - Email Me when i first heared these storys , i felt the police had killed the band members, and then frame the rock bands. this is the first time a ritual killing been discovered. and it happen in same year. who called the police? the police discover a fresh kill that night and the cult is not there. why the bands kill one after the other only to see each other get caught? this is so box-office archtype yet it never happens. the same offical store is the rock band dose the ritual killing. leaves the body. the police show up on the same night. finds the fresh body ,even if it bury. then rounds up the rock band, which is else where. this may not be acurrate but its how i read it. |
