Federal ID Plan Raises Privacy Concerns

Author: Eliott C. McLaughlin Source: CNN

Title: FEDERAL ID PLAN RAISES PRIVACY CONCERNS
Americans may need passports to board domestic flights or to picnic in a national park next year if they live in one of the states defying the federal Real ID Act.
Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff says there are no plans for a federal database of drivers' information.
The act, signed in 2005 as part of an emergency military spending and tsunami relief bill, aims to weave driver's licenses and state ID cards into a sort of national identification system by May 2008. The law sets baseline criteria for how driver's licenses will be issued and what information they must contain.
More than half the nation's state legislatures have passed or proposed legislation denouncing the plan, and some have penned bills expressly forbidding compliance.

"I'm sorry sir, you can't visit our National Park without a passport. No Yellowstone for you."
"Congresscritter, National Park visitation is down. Nobody wants to see the glory of 600-year-old redwoods any more, I guess. Can't we let people in to enjoy the scenery without demanding a passport?" --"Don't worry, we can sell the trees to Pacific Lumber and Paper Mill, I got a good deal. We can sponsor your re-education as a lumberjack." "But Congresscritter, I don't want to be a lumberjack. I became a wildlife biologist to save trees and animals, not to kill them." --"Well that's anti-American and anti-capitalist! You sound like some kinda lib-er-uuuhhhhllll Commie thar! You some kinda Clinton-lover or somethin'?"
I am still astounded that these people run our country. Please, can't we have some MIT students hack the whole governance system or something? Anything for a couple of neurons to rub together.

I advised straight-ticket, anti-'big government', fetus-obsessed, Republican friends and family when this first cropped up. They all looked at me as though I was delusional. Whenever a report *has* appeared in the MSM, I've quietly passed it on as a heads-up. Now they just shrug and say that those who have done nothing wrong have nothing to fear. Some even respond that these measures make them feel 'safer'.
Of course, the most complacent already have a passport. It will be...interesting...to see what happens when the US passport application process becomes even *more* hopelessly backlogged than it already is under this smirking, incompetent administration. Perhaps when Mr. and Mrs. John Q. Public can't take the family on a road trip vacation to one of the National Parks. Or board a plane to fly to Disney World. Or Vegas. Or to a family funeral out-of-state.
I suspect they will all be wailing then that the problems with Real ID are Bill Clinton's fault.

Having read the text of the Real ID Act; I can only say one thing.
No Way!!
This will affect all the visitors to the USA as we will require passports even to drive across the border. This is beginning to sound like Nazi Germany with the SS asking every one "Papers Please! No, Papers. *bang*" Put an end to the insanity at the next federal election and vote against this. Fight for your freedom. By sitting back and letting this happen; your government is taking away your rights and freedoms. What is next? The loss of religious freedom, like in Nazi Germany. There was no religion in Germany during the Nazi Rule. This sounds like it will be a Christian Only United States of America!!
Vote and have a say as to what your leaders can do. Don't vote and suffer from the the loss of your rights and freedoms. Even if the person you didn't vote for gets in, they still represent you.
Enough ranting from me now, but think about what is being said here.
Blessed Be to all

If the government really is worried that a terrorist will sneak into the US using a forged Texas birth certificate for ID, then how about they just write a law saying that any citizen who wants to leave the country get a passport? Hell of a lot cheaper than $14 billion, nobody who doesn't need one has to pay a dime, and no new departments or security protocols will have to be created. In fact, it's such an obvious solution, that there can only really be two valid reasons nobody in Washington seems to be bringing it up: A) There's something really obvious wrong with it that we're not catching because we don't work in Washington, or B) Washington has a hidden agenda.
Personally, my bet's on B.

with growing concern the number of new laws coming out of the Bush Administration and its cronies? Its like our rights are slowly being striped away, peeled away a layer at a time. I have to wonder how long our people are going to sit by calmly allowing their lands to be ravaged, their rights and freedoms raped and ripped away, and their people to die in a senseless war.
Its true, what they say, that if you stripe away rights a little at a time, that over the span of time people will forget the rights they once had and assume this is all they get. What will our children do if we do nothing? Will they be forced to live in a world resembling '1984'?
Bush may not have a title like furer or Caesar, but he seems to want one. And he may not be fighting the battle of Waterloo or bear a stubby little mustache, but his laws, ways, and ideas closely resemble those who do.
Everyone I talk to says that he will leave office when it is time for a new election. That the system is working 'right'. But I have to wonder how right the system is, when it allows the theft of our basic freedoms of speech and privacy. And it scares me to see all of these fundamentally cracked people in charge of our country.
