Samhain, which translates as "summer's end," was celebrated by the Celtic people of Ireland as the beginning of the dark half of the year, a new year and the greatest of four yearly festivals. It was associated with slaughtering livestock before winter, but its spiritual aspect was the most significant. | |

Naia (Nicosia, Cyprus) - Email Me It would have been a good article if it was better structured. It reads like a comparison report in Sociology of Religion exam rather as an informative article for the general public. I did like the information there though one should be careful when refering to Christian and Pagan traditions. The author was very careful to point out the relation to the CELTIC celebration of Samhain, as opposed to the relation with Christianity in general. Halloween is a western celebration and there is no equivalent celebration at the Orthodox church - Greek or Russian. As there is no relation of Samhain to the Hellenistic rooted paganism, but like I said its Celtic root was pointed out. |
