Hallowe’en Is The Devil’s Work, Catholic Church Warns Parents

Author: Graham Keeley and Richard Owen Source: The Times Online (UK)

Title: HALLOWE’EN IS THE DEVIL’S WORK, CATHOLIC CHURCH WARNS PARENTS
When Victoria Romero, 6, dressed up as a witch for a Hallowe’en party this week she could hardly have imagined that she was provoking the wrath of God by attending a celebration akin to a Black Mass — at least in the eyes of the Vatican and the Roman Catholic Church in Spain.
Wearing skeleton suits, dressing up as vampires, witches or goblins or slapping on fake blood is not far removed from communing with the Devil, according to the country’s bishops.
However, the bishops, with Vatican backing, have reserved their venom for the millions of parents who allowed their children to celebrate this “pagan” festival.
Father Joan María Canals, the director of the Spanish Bishops Conference Committee on Liturgy, condemned parents for permitting their children to go to “un-Christian” parties when they should be focusing on All Saints Day today and All Souls Day on Monday.

And secular holidays win! Despite its name, 'Halloween' will never, ever revert back to a celebration of . . . the Christian history of torture victims? C'mon, people like to party. They will NOT give this up. EVER! By the way, they're not too interested in your solemn Samhain rituals either. Do not be offended--it's all good, brothers and sisters.
Same thing happened to St. Valentines Day. It's a sex holiday now. Just try preaching Christian sainthood to your loved one on that special night. You better put out, or it's your ass, right?
Thanksgiving used to be heavily cloaked in religiosity and even ugly 'Union' propaganda (thanks to that miserable mass murderer, Abraham Lincoln) , but now it's just a hard-drinking harvest celebration, kind of a warm-up to Yuletide.
Even good old Christ'mas is so saturated with heavy drinking and materialism and hedonistic indulgence that the religious aspects barely stick at all, despite massive 'reclaiming' efforts by morons like Bill O'Reilly and of course these silly Catholic gooses.
Going to church is the LAST thing people schedule in on any of these days. The coffers are going empty. So do not worry! The more these Christianized pagan holidays naturally feature the pleasures of food and drink and good times and presents, the better off EVERYONE is.
Happy holidays!

This ought to go over like a lead balloon in Mexico, which is a very Catholic country.

I think the short answer is: Not many.
The only ones who will agree with them on this are those who are already fundamentalist in their mindset or those who feel insecure in their faith. (Which may also overlap with the fundie mindset.)
The Catholic Church is losing ground and they do not like it so they try bribery (the issue with them trying to get Anglican priests into their fold) or try to up their scare tactics onto the insecure.
Nobody forces them to celebrate Halloween, its just them who miss out.

If the monotheistic religions hate Halloween, it HAS to be a GOOD thing! As another stated, these mainstream religions are losing ground...FAST. People are just plain tired of the same old monotheistic blather that does NOTHING to enrich their lives. I was a fundy for over 20 years; I've been a Pagan for almost 10 years, and I'm a FAR happier person than I ever was in fundyanity! Best decision I ever made!

If the xian "Halloween" really were causing people to leave the bizarro-world xian cult, then I'd be all for it. Since it's not, I'll stick with my own private thing on Samhain.

It's obvious the Catholic Church is hurting, what with all the child molestation charges around the world, multiple and class action law suits and the bankruptcy fillings in an effort to hold onto their emence wealth, they're slipping fast.
I look forward to the day when there is no more Catholic Church. The world would be a much better place. It's time they pay for their many horrific crimes of the past and present. What goes around, comes around.

It's kind of embarrassing to think I grew up in that religion.
The Vatican has gotten crazier and crazier lately.
Pagan =/= evil.
Also, thanks to the writers of the article for telling the plain unvarnished truth about Halloween's history. Samhain is a day, not a deity.

It's like for these folks, pagan=evil is a given. It couldn't possibly be any other thing.
I always want to scream, "so what is so bad about pagans?"
But then i am torn too, because on one hand, I hate this sort of antipaganic rhetoric. I hate to see the church take some of the joy from children's lives, and the spark of creativity that goes into the costumes.
But, on the other hand, I don't think the average person wants to give up their holidays. It will make some people question the church, and i don't see that as a bad thing.
Guess that is why I'm such a witch.

I am sure the Catholic Church in Spain has a leg to stand on after the atrocities they denied during the last century. They should be concentrating on helping families find the remains of those murdered during Franco's reign. Halloween is nothing compared to the horrors these two brought to their country.

It really isn't provoking the wrath of any god, it's provoking the wrath of the church, who are in some places losing their grip on the minds of their sheep, and they have resorted to this shameless scare tactic in order to frighten them back into the pews. As for not knowing what they are celebrating, I fear the church disgracefully belittles its followers far too much and treats them as children, when in fact, they are far more aware of what this holiday means than the church is. For everyone else, it's just a party, a reason to have a good time- and that is all and those who don't wish to, don't have to celebrate it if they don't want to. Pushing a people by fear, works only so long before some decide they are far better off out of the pews than in them and tell the "good" padre what he can actually do with his cross the next time they see him.
