 Inmate Gets His Wish: Witch Name Author: Todd Cooper Source: Omaha World-Herald (NE) Title: INMATE GETS HIS WISH: WITCH NAME   Let's just hope this guy doesn't give witches a bad name.Just in time for Halloween, former Fremont resident Billy Joe McDonald has received a judge's permission to change his “Christian” name to his “witch” name: Hayden Autumn Blackthorne. In requesting the change for religious reasons, McDonald — er, Blackthorne — wrote that he is “a lifetime member of Witch School,” a “recognized Wiccan Priest” and a person who has “successfully completed Correllian Wicca — First Degree.” And, oh yeah, McDonald also noted that he is a sex offender who has been successfully convicted of sexual assault — first degree. | |

Finn (San Marcos, Texas) - Email Me The media is pretty friendly to those under the pagan umbrella. For every story that covers criminals and nutjobs there are ten that pop up dedicated to dispelling myths about pagan (even as they create new warm fuzzy myths) . There is also a difference between the real media and "opinion" articles. Personally, I think this article is valuable because it demonstrates a total lack of standards and background checks under which the so-called "Witch School" operates. The organization is a large pay-for-profit venture. I don't celebrate when an inmate decides he/she is pagan. Why would I? I would rather they did convert to Christianity (or anything else really) for the simple reason that I don't want them as peers. I prefer my cohorts to be non-criminals. Paganism is a blanket term covering many, many faiths, but actively seeking converts (or being so desperate for them that we celebrate scum joining) isn't really part of the paradigm. |

I'd like to rebutt the commenters. I think we have a chance here to turn the anti-pagan media on its arse, by celebrating the in-prison-conversion experience of guys like this. When a violent criminal turns to Buddhism in prison, everyone says..."ahhh! well done!" and celebrates the persons' turning towards spirituality, away from their "wretched ways". Why shouldn't this be the same? |

I wonder if he will write a similar article about any one of the (85% of US prison population) incarcerated Christians around Christmas? |
