Going Green? What About Going Pagan?

Author: Hannah Wasserman   Source: State Press (Arizona State Univ.)

Title: GOING GREEN? WHAT ABOUT GOING PAGAN?

Last weekend, most of us were probably at a party dressed up as our favorite celebrity or superhero, watching a scary movie or screaming with fright at a haunted house.

But how many of us were celebrating Samhain, the Celtic pagan harvest holiday of fall, the ancestor of the now drastically different Halloween?

The answer is: increasingly more of us than we probably thought.

Since the rise of the major world monotheistic religions, Judaism, Christianity and Islam, and of secular culture, pagans have gotten a pretty bad rap. When we switched to one God or no god at all, we labeled pagans as heathens and idol worshipers, connoting uncivilized primitiveness and even evil.

And yet, the last half-century has seen the rise of Neo-paganism in America, a revitalization of pagan traditions in the form of such religions as Wicca, Druidism, Feri Tradition and Church of All Worlds.

"A seemingly outdated world-view...."

I LOVE that one.... **shakes head**

AS far as I am concerned, if there is anything that is OUTDATED, and has outlived it's proverbial "15 minutes of fame" it's The Big Three, and everybody knows what I mean.... seems funny to me that my Native American ancestors lived for HUNDREDS of years and many, many generations without fundieism. And if any people were "green" it was them. They always loved and respected Mother Earth and believed in never taking more than what you needed. Is that an "Outdated world view?" I think not. And if there has been ANYTHING that has caused more wars, death, misery and destruction, it is xtianity and all it's little offshoots. I think we as as humans need to step back and decide which is really "Outdated". A religion that opresses half the world's population, causes wars and Burning Times, or a religion that believes in taking care of Mother Earth and Living simply so that others can simply live.

What will we choose?

Love to all
