Into The Bavarian Forest

Author: Carola Schlagheck Source: Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (DE)

Title: RETURNING TO NATURE AND HISTORY
One has to travel to the extreme south-east of Germany to find something that the country isn't really known for: wildlife roaming a primeval forest. In the sparsely populated region between the Danube river and the Czech border in Lower Bavaria, the Bavarian Forest forms part of one of the largest coherent forests in central Europe, stretching over 600,000 hectares (1.5 million acres).
Parts of the forest area were turned into Germany's first national park in 1970, also coined “Europe's Green Roof.“ The size of the park was doubled in 1997 to some 24,000 ha. Mankind was not supposed to interfere in the park to ensure the natural development of the forest and to preserve the biodiversity of local flora and fauna. Farming, hunting and wood-cutting is banned from the Bavarian Forest national park, which is used, however, for research.
What gives the Bavarian Forest its special appeal, however, is the fostering of age-old Christian and pagan traditions. Shut off from the rest of the world - Munich, the next big city is a two-hour car ride away - and tucked away in a rather inaccessible forest and mountain area, the foresters preserved their traditions and unique ways over the centuries.

I hiked the Bavaian Forest in the summer of '93 as a warmup before hiking up a 10,000 ft. peak in Austria's south Tyrol. One of my treasures is the beechwood hiking stick that a friend carved for me on that trip. It's some of the most beautiful scenery I've ever gazed upon. Another interesting feature was the many ancient maypoles in village squares and the numerous Goddess/Mary shrines erected in the hills. I'd love to go back with my daughter and partner.
