Author: Chris Gaylord   Source: Christian Science Monitor

Title: LEONID METEOR SHOWER TIMES: WHEN YOU SHOULD LOOK SKYWARD

The Leonid meteor shower is back in town Tuesday morning. Every November, Earth gets a spritz of meteor light in the night sky. While Asia will get the best show this year, early birds in North America can enjoy a few dozen Leonid meteors per hour.

Thinking of getting up early? Americans, set your clocks to 3:30 a.m. East Coast time. The shower will run from then until about 5:30 a.m. However, no matter where you live, you may luck out and catch a stray meteor anytime between 1 a.m. and dawn.

Retired Policeman Speaks In Farmville On Occult

Author: Jeremy Slayton   Source: Richmond Times-Dispatch (VA)

Title: RETIRED POLICEMAN SPEAKS IN FARMVILLE ON OCCULT

Juggalos, Wiccans, Satanists and vampires are all subcultures of the occult that are on the periphery of the mainstream.

Don Rimer, a retired member of the Virginia Beach Police Department who studies ritual crime and the occult, spoke yesterday about these cultures and ritual crime to about 100 people at Farmville United Methodist Church.

"This is all about education. This is awareness and recognition about all of these behaviors, and the crimes associated with them," Rimer said, although he was quick to point out that not all people associated with Satanism and the occult are violent criminals.

More: Wiccan Sues Bath and Body Works Over Firing

Author: Leanne Gendreau, AP   Source: NBC Connecticut

Title: WICCAN SUES BATH AND BODY WORKS OVER FIRING

All Gina Uberti wanted to do was take Halloween week off in October 2008 and head up to Salem, Massachusetts with other Wiccans for a festival.

That’s apparently what Wiccans, especially those who live near Witch City, do during this major Wiccan religious event.

The Bath and Body Works district manager put in for her vacation time, as she had for the previous six years she worked for the company. Her time was approved, she said, she was all set. At least she thought she was, according to a lawsuit Uberti filed against Bath and Body Works last month.

The problem for Uberti’s vacation plans, and her employment, began with a management shuffle and a new boss, she claims.

The DIY Spiritual Practice

Author: Doug Muder   Source: UU World Magazine (uuworld.org)

Title: THE DIY SPIRITUAL PRACTICE

I often envy people who practice a spiritual discipline. It almost doesn't matter what they do. Zen, maybe, or yoga. Shamanic drumming. Sufi dancing. Kaballah. Ceremonial magick. Pagan witchcraft. Or even something as mainstream as regularly praying to God.

Whatever it is, it has a name and thousands, maybe millions, of fellow practitioners around the world. There's a shelf for it at Barnes and Noble and cool terminology like chi or karma or agape. Probably there's a saint or prophet or some other towering figure who exemplifies it, and maybe even some celebrity followers who get the whole thing written up in People.

I don't have any of that.

It's not that I don't have a discipline. I do, but it's like so much of what Unitarian Universalists do—my wife Deb and I have cobbled it together for ourselves over a couple of decades. I'd be amazed if we aren't the only people who practice it.

The Evolution Of The God Gene

Author: Nicholas Wade   Source: New York Times

Title: THE EVOLUTION OF THE GOD GENE

In the Oaxaca Valley of Mexico, the archaeologists Joyce Marcus and Kent Flannery have gained a remarkable insight into the origin of religion.

During 15 years of excavation they have uncovered not some monumental temple but evidence of a critical transition in religious behavior. The record begins with a simple dancing floor, the arena for the communal religious dances held by hunter-gatherers in about 7,000 B.C. It moves to the ancestor-cult shrines that appeared after the beginning of corn-based agriculture around 1,500 B.C., and ends in A.D. 30 with the sophisticated, astronomically oriented temples of an early archaic state.

This and other research is pointing to a new perspective on religion, one that seeks to explain why religious behavior has occurred in societies at every stage of development and in every region of the world.
