The DIY Spiritual Practice

Author: Doug Muder   Source: UU World Magazine (uuworld.org)

Title: THE DIY SPIRITUAL PRACTICE

I often envy people who practice a spiritual discipline. It almost doesn't matter what they do. Zen, maybe, or yoga. Shamanic drumming. Sufi dancing. Kaballah. Ceremonial magick. Pagan witchcraft. Or even something as mainstream as regularly praying to God.

Whatever it is, it has a name and thousands, maybe millions, of fellow practitioners around the world. There's a shelf for it at Barnes and Noble and cool terminology like chi or karma or agape. Probably there's a saint or prophet or some other towering figure who exemplifies it, and maybe even some celebrity followers who get the whole thing written up in People.

I don't have any of that.

It's not that I don't have a discipline. I do, but it's like so much of what Unitarian Universalists do—my wife Deb and I have cobbled it together for ourselves over a couple of decades. I'd be amazed if we aren't the only people who practice it.

The Evolution Of The God Gene

Author: Nicholas Wade   Source: New York Times

Title: THE EVOLUTION OF THE GOD GENE

In the Oaxaca Valley of Mexico, the archaeologists Joyce Marcus and Kent Flannery have gained a remarkable insight into the origin of religion.

During 15 years of excavation they have uncovered not some monumental temple but evidence of a critical transition in religious behavior. The record begins with a simple dancing floor, the arena for the communal religious dances held by hunter-gatherers in about 7,000 B.C. It moves to the ancestor-cult shrines that appeared after the beginning of corn-based agriculture around 1,500 B.C., and ends in A.D. 30 with the sophisticated, astronomically oriented temples of an early archaic state.

This and other research is pointing to a new perspective on religion, one that seeks to explain why religious behavior has occurred in societies at every stage of development and in every region of the world.

Faith Groups To Be Key Policy Advisers

Author: Jonathan Wynne-Jones   Source: The Telegraph (UK)

Title: FAITH GROUPS TO BE KEY POLICY ADVISERS

John Denham, the communities secretary, said the values of Christians, Muslims and other religions were essential in building a "progressive society".

He attacked secularists who have called for religion to be kept out of public life.

Mr Denham revealed that a new panel of religious experts has been set up to advise the Government on making public policy decisions.

The move has been criticised by secularists who warned that it represented a worrying development.

Man Finds 3,000-Year-Old Sword

Author: Aftenposten   Source: UPI

Title: MAN FINDS 3,000-YEAR-OLD SWORD

A Norwegian man said experts told him the sword he found abandoned at a roadside four years ago dates back 3,000 years.

Ernst Skofteland said he asked a team of archaeologists digging on a farm near his home to look at the sword, which he discovered at the side of a lumber road in a forest area four years ago, and they told him it dates from around 1100-900 B.C., Aftenposten reported Friday.

Strange Satanic Church Posters Cause Concern

Author: Lauren Rogers   Source: Worcester News (UK)

Title: STRANGE SATANIC CHURCH POSTERS CAUSE CONCERN

Strange posters that apparently promote the Church of Satan have caused concern in Worcester.

Posters advertising a ‘family friendly’ Church of Satan gathering have appeared in various locations around St John’s, much to the surprise and upset of some local people. The leaflets, carrying the symbol of the hugely controversial group, suggests that members will be meeting for a barbecue and games in St John’s Cemetery, McIntyre Road, at midnight ‘this Saturday’.

There is no specific date and no contact details on the poster leading some people to believe their appearance on walls and inside shops is simply a hoax. But some residents are worried.

Happy Heathen Holiday

Author: Eden Pang   Source: Daily Californian

Title: HAPPY HEATHEN HOLIDAY

Last week, as I wandered into Peet's, I noticed that they had added their list of holiday flavors. I immediately began hopping up and down and chattering endlessly about my excitement to my friend who, quite frankly, looked a little bit frightened.

But I couldn't help it-when Peppermint Hot Chocolate appears on the menu, it only means one thing: Christmas is coming!

I, like all sane people, absolutely love Christmas. I've been listening to Christmas music since August, cutting paper snowflakes since September and talking incessantly about the holidays for the past month. I love Christmas, and I always will.

As an atheist, I view Christmas as a completely secular holiday, which seems to upset some people.
