Action Alert: FFRF Demands End To District's Discrimination Against Atheists

Author: The Freedom From Religion Foundation Source: The Freedom From Religion Foundation

Title: ACTION ALERT: FFRF DEMANDS END TO DISTRICT'S DISCRIMINATION AGAINST ATHEISTS
The Freedom From Religion Foundation, responding to complaints from concerned Indianapolis taxpayers, has sent a letter of strong objection to the Indianapolis Public School system for its policy of censorship of web content that promotes or provides information about "atheistic views." This policy, which also censors Wicca, Witchcraft, "voodoo rituals or any other for of mysticism," is unlawful because it violates the Free Speech Clause as unconstitutional viewpoint discrimination, FFRF charges.
This policy does not prohibit or even mention religious views such as Christianity. A website like FFRF.org, which educates on freethought and nontheism, would, however, be blocked under this policy. This promotes religion over nonreligion, which is forbidden under the Establishment Clause.

The performance was part of a celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month sponsored by the city of Farmington's Community Relations Commission.

Title: KIDS BOOKS: A CONVERSATION WITH 'STREGA NONA' AUTHOR TOMIE DEPAOLA
She's not much to look at, but she's got loads of character. Most important, she's got a magical touch when it comes to attracting young readers.
Her name is Strega Nona, and she's the creation of children's-book author/illustrator Tomie dePaola. Since 1975, dePaola (pronounced da-POW-la) has been chronicling the life of Strega Nona, the grandmotherly Italian witch/folk healer and her magic pasta pot.
Now, Strega Nona is back in her ninth adventure, "Strega Nona's Harvest" (Putnam, $16.99). In this story, Strega Nona takes readers through the cycle of planting a vegetable garden, helped by her assistants, Bambolona and lovable bumbler Big Anthony.

Title: VAMPIRE CLUBS, COVENS AND LAIRS SPRING UP
Vampire clubs, covens and lairs have sprung up across Australia in the wake of the Twilight craze.
Even individuals claiming to be real blood-drinkers have emerged within these groups.
Stephanie Meyer's Twilight saga, hit TV show True Blood, and The Vampire Diaries have taken hold of popular culture, reviving interest in the age-old legend of immortal blood-suckers, The Sunday Telegraph reports.
Although many teenagers and their mums enjoy the Twilight movie for heart-throb Robert Pattinson, there are some who consider themselves real-life versions of his character, Edward Cullen.
A plethora of vampire groups have emerged online where people with gothic interests can arrange to get together in the real world.

Vanished Persian Army Said Found In Desert

Author: Rossella Lorenzi, Discovery News Source: MSNBC

Title: VANISHED PERSIAN ARMY SAID FOUND IN DESERT
The remains of a mighty Persian army said to have drowned in the sands of the western Egyptian desert 2,500 years ago might have been finally located, solving one of archaeology's biggest outstanding mysteries, according to Italian researchers.
Bronze weapons, a silver bracelet, an earring and hundreds of human bones found in the vast desolate wilderness of the Sahara desert have raised hopes of finally finding the lost army of Persian King Cambyses II. The 50,000 warriors were said to be buried by a cataclysmic sandstorm in 525 B.C.
"We have found the first archaeological evidence of a story reported by the Greek historian Herodotus," Dario Del Bufalo, a member of the expedition from the University of Lecce, told Discovery News.
According to Herodotus (484-425 B.C.), Cambyses, the son of Cyrus the Great, sent 50,000 soldiers from Thebes to attack the Oasis of Siwa and destroy the oracle at the Temple of Amun after the priests there refused to legitimize his claim to Egypt.

Indian Elephants To Go From Zoos

Author: BBC News Source: BBC

Title: INDIAN ELEPHANTS TO GO FROM ZOOS
The Central Zoo Authority in India has confirmed to the BBC that zoos and circuses in the country will no longer be allowed to keep elephants.
A spokesman for the authority said a binding directive had been issued by the authority for the animals to be sent to national parks and sanctuaries.
The directive sent by by the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) says zoos and circuses are "not the best places for the large animals" which "require a large area to move about freely".
The CZA says circus and zoo elephants can play an important eco-tourism role in national parks and animal sanctuaries, where they can be properly supervised by mahauts - or elephant handlers.
