Strange Satanic Church Posters Cause Concern

Author: Lauren Rogers Source: Worcester News (UK)

Title: STRANGE SATANIC CHURCH POSTERS CAUSE CONCERN
Strange posters that apparently promote the Church of Satan have caused concern in Worcester.
Posters advertising a ‘family friendly’ Church of Satan gathering have appeared in various locations around St John’s, much to the surprise and upset of some local people. The leaflets, carrying the symbol of the hugely controversial group, suggests that members will be meeting for a barbecue and games in St John’s Cemetery, McIntyre Road, at midnight ‘this Saturday’.
There is no specific date and no contact details on the poster leading some people to believe their appearance on walls and inside shops is simply a hoax. But some residents are worried.

Happy Heathen Holiday

Author: Eden Pang Source: Daily Californian

Title: HAPPY HEATHEN HOLIDAY
Last week, as I wandered into Peet's, I noticed that they had added their list of holiday flavors. I immediately began hopping up and down and chattering endlessly about my excitement to my friend who, quite frankly, looked a little bit frightened.
But I couldn't help it-when Peppermint Hot Chocolate appears on the menu, it only means one thing: Christmas is coming!
I, like all sane people, absolutely love Christmas. I've been listening to Christmas music since August, cutting paper snowflakes since September and talking incessantly about the holidays for the past month. I love Christmas, and I always will.
As an atheist, I view Christmas as a completely secular holiday, which seems to upset some people.

Faiths Debate Whether Tattoos Are Appropriate

Author: Peter Smith Source: Courier-Journal.com (KY)

Title: FAITHS DEBATE WHETHER TATTOOS ARE APPROPRIATE
Can devout Christians or Jews get tattoos? That’s becoming the subject of a debate spreading nearly as quickly as body ink.
It wasn’t that long ago that tattoos, if they had any religious meaning, were viewed mostly in the West as pagan. In “Moby Dick,” Herman Melville describes the pagan harpooner Queequeg as having covered his body with tattoos depicting “a complete theory of the heavens and the earth, and a mystical treatise on the art of attaining truth.”
But now there are Jews tattooing words like “Zion” and kabbalistic symbols on their bodies, while Christians are tattooing crosses, angels and other symbols. Tattoos covered the body of faith healer Todd Bentley, who had a meteoric rise in Pentecostal circles last year before his scandalous fall. Some of his critics said his display of tattoos itself should have been a signal of someone seeking too much attention.
Jews and Christians opposed to tattoos point to a biblical prohibition in Leviticus 19:28 against printing marks upon oneself.

King Arthur In Nursery Visit

Author: Morwenna Blake Source: Salisbury Journal

Title: KING ARTHUR IN NURSERY VISIT
Nursery children had an unusual visitor when King Arthur Pendragon and some of his fellow Druids came in to talk to them about Stonehenge.
King Arthur chatted to the children, answering their questions and demonstrated a simple Pagan ceremony around the stones children had constructed from cardboard boxes as part of the project.

Police Worker Fired For Backing Psychic Investigations Claims Religious Discrimination

Author: Matthew Moore Source: The Telegraph (UK)

Title: POLICE WORKER FIRED FOR BACKING PSYCHIC INVESTIGATIONS CLAIMS RELIGIOUS DISCRIMINATION
Alan Power, who has been a member of a Spiritualist church for 30 years, argues that his belief in the power of mediums should be placed on a par with more mainstream religious and philosophical convictions.
He has already secured a legal ruling that his principles are covered by laws designed to prevent religious discrimination in the workplace, and is now seeking to prove that they were the reason for his dismissal.
Mr Power's case follows a landmark ruling last month that environmental views should be considered equivalent to religious and philosophical beliefs, following a legal challenge by a green executive at a property firm.

Action Alert: FFRF Demands End To District's Discrimination Against Atheists

Author: The Freedom From Religion Foundation Source: The Freedom From Religion Foundation

Title: ACTION ALERT: FFRF DEMANDS END TO DISTRICT'S DISCRIMINATION AGAINST ATHEISTS
The Freedom From Religion Foundation, responding to complaints from concerned Indianapolis taxpayers, has sent a letter of strong objection to the Indianapolis Public School system for its policy of censorship of web content that promotes or provides information about "atheistic views." This policy, which also censors Wicca, Witchcraft, "voodoo rituals or any other for of mysticism," is unlawful because it violates the Free Speech Clause as unconstitutional viewpoint discrimination, FFRF charges.
This policy does not prohibit or even mention religious views such as Christianity. A website like FFRF.org, which educates on freethought and nontheism, would, however, be blocked under this policy. This promotes religion over nonreligion, which is forbidden under the Establishment Clause.

Storyteller Delights Audience With Hispanic Folklore

Author: Steve Lynn Source: The Daily Times (NM)

Title: STORYTELLER DELIGHTS AUDIENCE WITH HISPANIC FOLKLORE
Nasario García's eyes widened as he told the story of a boy who snuck out of his grandmother's home and was attacked by a witch.
"You disobeyed, you got punished," said García, waving his hands and stepping forward as he explained the moral of the story. "Don't do it again."
García, an author of books on Hispanic culture and stories, told folk tales and explained New Mexican superstitions to a small group of people Friday night at the Farmington Public Library.
The performance was part of a celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month sponsored by the city of Farmington's Community Relations Commission.
